My fiance and I pay $1100/month rent with everything included, now it just got raised to $1150. The super, who is a very nice person, told us that the cost of living has gone up but he says he will NOT raise beyond $1150. I hope so, I really do. Now the $50 raise in rent... that's $25 split in between my fiance and I... while that is not much, I agree, some people are getting $100 or more raises in rent generally speaking but still the fact that our rent "did" go up is kinda like having an evil Lucifer stare you in the eye with an evil wink and a hysterical laugh if you know what i mean.
I'm making $11.50 an hour, $380 a week after taxes, as an EMT, can you believe how RIDICULOUS that is for an ***EMT***???? Nevermind the fact that its a private company, that does nothing to justify how dumb that is. My girl is a nurse aide making $17 an hour (that's after 3 years of work, she started with $13.50). I signed up for EKG & Phlebotomy class this fall, so once I get that I'll be making around what my girl makes hopefully (according to what I've been hearing) and I won't have feel like Lucifer is giving an evil wink and a hysterical laugh just because he pinched me with a $50 rent raise.

Nobody ever likes a rent increase
I hope that the increase has come after a long period of you living there, otherwise it sucks even worse than usual.
Have you thought about becoming a paramedic for the fire department (if they have such a thing there where you live)? That might pay you more and I'm sure the benefits package is better than a private company too

fwidman,
Yeah we've been living here since September 2007, so almost 3 years. Nah I really wanna stay away from paramedic and away from EMS as much as possible. I know EKG/Phelebotomy has similarities to Paramedic but the difference is you dont really have to bust your behind as much nor do you have to drive a big ambulance nor do you have to worry about getting into an motor vehicle accident.

I hope you have a rent lease so you know your rent will remain the same price until your lease expires. When it gets close to the end of your lease, begin looking around for other places to live. You don't have to move if your rent remains the same, but at least you'll know the prices for other apartments.
We all have to live with cost increases, whether it's the cost of utilities, groceries, clothing, rent, house taxes, etc. We have choices - make more money or pay for the increases by eliminating something else. It's hard to do, but we have to separate our necessities from our wants.
You have places you don't want to work even though you can make more money. That's fine because we should all enjoy our jobs if we can. Stressful jobs can cause health problems and sometimes cause problems within relationships.
If you and your fiance work together on your needs and wants, you both will be able to overcome obstacles, whether they have to do with money, careers, or other issues. I wish you the best with your future marriage.

I hope your carreer ideas come true. Meanwhile, let us hope no other evil will come near you. Tell the super to put in writing that there will not be any other raise. Words are gone with the wind.
