Food Security

Well the only thing I can see people doing is uniting together and creating a super huge stock of food that humans could use in the future for emergency purposes. Then we would have to find ways to adapt to the changing climate. So probably in the next 20-50 years we will probably see just how much the climate is changing and when we do it might be too late for us to do anything. So we should prepare before its too later and we need to find ways to get the world back into balance.

before, we exported rice. now, we import rice. food security is a basic concern of any government for its population. the shift from exporter to importer of rice shows lack of concern from our government. with tremendous resources and power, the government can do so much to tackle this problem. instead, it is focusing on non-food security issues such as charter change and terrorism. agriculture should again be at the core of government's programs to be able to reduce the hunger incidents in the country. instead, we focus on food aid and temporary relief from hunger. this government is not doing its mandate. i am glad it has only a year to stay.

it is so ironic that we have IRRI that researches on improving rice production and I think they are the one that has discovered high yield rice varieties but then we don't take advantage of that technology. The countries like Thailand and many other Southeast Asian Countries have already taken advantage of these and they have been reaping good harvest and even boast of exporting them to us. I think the lack of government support to the farmers and the increase in Rice Cartels here are the ones that make it difficult to make the necessary changes in the country. Rice Cartels hoard the rice and create an artificial shortage of rice so they can pump up the prices while they are buying the rice from Farmers at a cheaper price. On the other hand the government could not catch one who are hoarders. They capture the small ones but the bigger ones are nowhere to be found and continues to take their profits.

The farmers here don't get support in our government and many rural lands are converted to using that's why our food supplies decreases. Typhoons and floods are also the problem why the production of food getting smaller. The population is also the contributor to this problem. The food supply is not enough to all of us. Corruptions is still the big problem in the Department of Agriculture. Like for example here in Cavite many lands here are converted to subdivision and factories. Farmers can't sustain the cost of seeds and fertilizers that's why they sell their lands to private sectors.

Adapt or die. That's what I always say.

I think, the reason why the rice production couldn't supply the demand of our population because the Department of Agirculture doens't have much support to the farmers. So the farmers (like me) ended up selling our farm lands to the commercial company and build lots of huge buildings. So only few farm lands left, rice production flactuate. It should be blame on the government on what's happening in our Agricultural industry, lots of corruptions happening and wrong usage of money.

It is certainly a worry but as humans we normally get by.It won't be easy for some poor souls.They do have world food programmes to sort this food crisis out.I do feel you have rather a long term feeling of depression and it is not healthy to worry like this.You are right agriculture must be better organised and a fairer food policy.
