I think it's unreasonable that he doesn't keep his regulars in mind, or his locals, when putting on something like this. If he loses his core of regular customers, then his business is on a downward slide. Besides which, he isn't staging it for the customers particularly, but for the custom, and his profit from the evening. That is rather a selfish attitude, I feel. I know that publicans have to fight hard to survive these days but to exclude your main core of customers in order to make a quick buck, is a rather foolish move. He paid £1,500 for the band and took £3,000 in ticket sales, so from that, I would imagine he will be wanting to increase the number of events he puts on, and things can only get worse.

As for your little man and his sit-on lawn mower. That's funny, my friend. It sounds as though he's training the wife up too! ha ha ha. There is a lot of noise here during the day with chain saws cutting down or trimming trees, and lawn mowers, but that to me, IS country life, and I can handle that. I too love to listen to the birds, and the owls hooting in the night, as well as the badgers and foxes calling.

I had to laugh when I got notification of this response. Right underneath it came an email about lawns. It says....

Having a compulsive neighbor with a tractor right next door, I can identify. My neighbor mows half of my front as well as his own, so he can "turn around". I feel like he dislikes how I keep or do not keep my lawn. It is not as bad as the one before him, who after mowing the lawn, would then weed eat next to the wooden fence, what a racket!!

Mexican parties with self-made music, or really loud acoustics on record, or CD? There's a difference. I don't mind cultural music on live instruments without the sound aides. I can listen to that, and not have it forcing its way into my quiet, private space. If I want to go out into the garden and listen, I can, but I couldn't hear myself think here, my friend, and it was driving me nuts.

And, yes, it's unfair that they would lock
out locals who just want to pop into the pub
for a relaxing drink.

They should at least have another section for
locals to enjoy who are not participating in
the private party. I'm sure the pub could easily
make some kind of accomodations.

As for Mexican parties, don't get me started.

I love Latin music like no one's business,
but even I have my limits!

In Florida, where we used to live, we had a lovely
Hispanic Mexican family that lived in the house behind ours.

They were the neighbors over the fence.

And they always had the best parties and fireworks on
EVERY occasion, including Saturday nights.

They would stay out late talking and laughing in their yard
and the kids would stay out late too, sometimes till
eleven pm at night.

And while I always loved listening to the festive family
environment, sometimes, their musical choice left
much to be appreciated.

They would put on this one favorite Mexican song
and play it again and again.

And, since they played the song in their house, the only
part I could hear was that annoying
bass part. No vocals, just the bass and drums and whatever
instruments were being used. And it was so horribly loud
and disruptive.

That's the only part that could penetrate into the walls
of my house.

It kept me from going to sleep many Saturday nights.
And on some Sunday mornings, it's what woke me up.

One Fourth of July, when my daughter was about 18 months old,
I gave up trying to put up with the noise, music and fireworks
and had to call the cops cause they were setting off firecrackers
at midnight and partying loud.

Celebrations I can understand, but not when my kid is trying to sleep.

Ironically, the next year, she saw the fireworks from the
window and loved them!

And for the next three years, we had a lovely fireworks display
from the neighbors.

And it was always fun.

Can't imagine how much money they spent on the fireworks.

But it was the best show in town, even better than the one
that the local city officials put on at Fourth of July celebrations.

That's just it, Beauty. They do have one section they can lock off so that the garden area can't be accessed, and in which they can put customers who just want to take that relaxing pint or two during the evening. But consideration wasn't given to them in the light of the landlords making money.

Those Mexican parties are sounding greater by the minute. I would love to hear the music played on personal instruments, which weren't sound exaggerated. I love cultural music of all kinds, but I keep getting loud CDs in my head, like "The Mexicans Dance On Their Hats". lol. That wouldn't appeal to me at all, although I enjoy a good firework display! he he.

MOstly CDs But some times instrament s and yup they set off fireworks too we set in back yard and wath them .
And I always wonder at the cost of these partys for it seems like they really out do thierselves

There is one slight difference here in that this is an English village in the countryside... nothing like a small town, either in England or the USA, my friend. We don't have big college buildings or anything like that, and the normal driving past of cars with their radios full blast, as you say, doesn't last for more than a few seconds. We don't even have any shops left in the village, nor a high street... just the pub, a restaurant right away at the top of the village, and a couple of garages, top and bottom. We have one, infant and junior school, a church, and that's it basically. The only time we have loudish music at night really is the annual village fete's barn dance, and that's nothing compared with the volume that hit us tonight... it's merely a whisper on the wind!

I don't envy you that you had the sound of bands in the college, but as you say, an employee living closeby soon put a stop to it. I fear that won't happen here, because he has a way of getting around it. He bills it as a private party, but then, takes money for the privilege of attending. So, he'll probably continue to get away with things, and then, he'll get greedy because of his success financially at this one, and want more and more of them. Things can only get worse if he's allowed to do that.

Well, I'm glad to see you sorted out those twins and their friends, finally! I know how they were getting you down.

I haven't stood outside screeching, broom in hand yet, my friend, but if they come up in the early hours of the morning, inebriated and loud, violating the vehicles as they come, I might just be out there! As it is, at the moment, the music has stopped, and a fair few left straight after, so he won't be getting the beer money from them, even if they could see the bar for revelling kids!

It's now twenty past midnight and the majority of them are still down there... I can hear them laughing and talking in the garden... THREE HUNDRED or so yards away! A lot of them will be driving home out of the village, and I'm dreading when the pub closes. Still, I'm not so on edge now as I was, and probably all will be forgotten in a few days. lol.

I don't think it's being grouchy so much as moving to somewhere "quiet" because you appreciate some quiet time, and then getting blasted! If I wanted to hear loud music all the time, I would move into a big town or city where there were nightclubs and stuff. As it is, this is a case of a townie landlord taking over a village pub, and upsetting all his neighbours. I guess it wouldn't be so agitating if he allowed them to take their normal Saturday evening drink in the one bar that can be locked off from the mayhem of this type of event.

I'm three hundred yards or so away from the pub. It's not like it's on my doorstep, such was the volume of noise, my friend. Also, I've been here much longer than the landlord of the pub, and I don't intend to move away from a place I love to be because of his attitude. I'd rather do what you say and report the incident to the police and the local council. I've lived here for seventeen years, and he's been at the pub for less than two. Of course I'm annoyed, but I don't see why I should move away because he's inconsiderate.

It's not even a nightclub, my friend. It's a small, country pub which holds probably 100 drinkers safely, without fire risk. I know they used the garden area, but that's not too big either, and he crammed 300 people in there, at a cost of £10 a head. As for compensation, it wouldn't worry me whether I got in for free or not because I don't like Abba. It's the whole choice thing. A village pub with village regulars who are the core of the pub's business being locked out from having their normal, Saturday evening drink, is what bugs me... and others. The landlord has the facility to lock off the saloon bar and restaurant area (the largest area of the pub with access to the screened off garden). The small, public bar which is locked off would serve the regulars well if they wished to visit the pub for an hour for their normal pint or two, without the hustle and bustle of the event. But no... a PUBLIC house, is turned private, and villagers excluded, plus they're drowned in the noise of the music, applause, shouting, whistling and cheering that's going on.

I did lead a campaign once to keep our pub open, and succeeded, when the pub was sold to a property developer. We managed to keep it open, but the landlord decided to retire early and live of the proceedings of the lease. That's when all the trouble started, and we haven't had really decent landlords since, but this one takes the biscuit. He needs a town pub, where people don't worry so much about noise... even expect it. I've tried to reason with them several times, but they just can't see it, so I guess you're right. If we can get the majority of villagers on side, then we might be able to put an end to this carry on.

I agree, I COULD be down the street from a major music event every night but I chose not to live in such a place. I did my time in those places, like Brighton, and then, chose to move into a country village which is quiet, and suffers no such noise exept once a year, on village day, when they have an evening barn dance. Even THAT is not a patch on the noise from the event last night. You can hear it... granted, but the noise level is low because it's inside a marquee. This was open air and LOUD; something you wouldn't expect in a sleepy country village, my friend.

Therefore, I feel the landlord is encroaching on our privacy and tranquility... not that we're putting ourselves in the firing line, and it irks me. It also irks me that the villagers are being pushed out of their only pub to make way for revellers from outside towns who are lining the landlord's pocket. The village won't benefit from the event in any way, whatsoever. They can't even go for a drink on a Saturday night because they're locked out of their one, PUBLIC house... their major social centre of the village. It's hardly fair, and then to have the volume so high that we could hear every word loudly from this distance, is diabolical.

I would say that unless this becomes a regular thing, every weekend or even once a month, you might just consider it a trial to over come. If it does become frequent enough, you need to see about passing a village rule against it.

I doubt he could manage it every single month because of the preparation time, ticket sales, etc., but it's worth taking notes when it does happen.

You've hit the nail right on the head my friend. In my younger days, I lived over eighteen years in Brighton. The place is full of clubs and nightclubs and buzzing every night, until probably three or four in the morning. Fair dos. You can take it when you're young, and even join in.

As I grew older though, I decided I'd had enough of the "city lights and sounds", and chose to move somewhere quieter... much quieter, in the countryside. There is a population of some 1500 people here, but widely spread as the village stretches some ten to twelve square miles. Ok... I live in the village centre, but there are no shops or late night entertainment, other than the pub. Every night, you hear loud youngsters passing at around 11.45, but in seconds, they've passed and it's no problem. They're just out having a bit of fun, a game of pool or darts, and time with their friends. But this? There were 300 people in the garden and building last night; a tiny pub which holds about a hundred people without fire risk, and a garden about the same size. The event was in the open, no marquee.. nothing, and you can imagine the noise of the music with 300 people shouting over top of it, applauding, joining in and shouting. The whole street was lined both sides with parked cars, and our tenants' car park was full. Added to that, the music, which started at 9.00 p.m. was loud enough for the Albert Hall. Goodness knows how people felt who live closer to the pub. They couldn't even pop in for a drink to calm their nerves because they were locked out!

I've calmed a bit today, but I'm fearful that it will happen more often now he's seen he can make £1,500 profit a throw, without the profit on drinks. It really was a relief when it ended though... I can tell you that much.

Thank you my friend. It was exceptionally loud for me to hear it as though I was playing loud music in my home, three hundred yards away. I'm feeling a lot better today but I fear it might happen more often since that was a success for the landlord, unless we rally together and do something about it. That sort of thing is ok for a biggish town or city, but not here, I feel.

I don't envy you with the college kids either. Some can be quite considerate but some get carried away with it all, and they can get quite loud.

If I were to play music at a third of the volume they were playing, in my own home, my neighbours would freak, and I don't blame them. It seems that all the landlord was interested in was lining his pockets and gaining some more outside customers, at the cost of the villagers' comfort in their own homes. There were three hundred people in that tiny pub and garden, which is way above fire regulation numbers, and they had to pay £10 a head to put their safety in jeopardy, and that's without considering the locals whose peace was shattered. It's deplorable and irresponsible behaviour on the landlord's part, I feel, and it's not acceptable in any circumstances.
