My standalone LITEON DVD recorder hooked into my TV can be used to record from external sources..it has what is described as a DV link input (Looks like a mini USB input) and 3x phono sockets which I've used to transfer home movies from my 8mm tape camcorder..there may be newer equipment on the market to do the same job...they're useful if you've lots of movies to transfer :) Good luck with that.

I got my DVD recorder cheap on ebay about a year ago as it was a refurbished model..I've had no problems with it and it works great..I just took a look there on the site, and there's a bunch of higher spec.machines with built in Hard disk Drives available for under £50 on "Buy it Now" ($75?)

I've never heard of anything like this, but it would be an interesting thing to look at. I have one of those cameras too, and I just use my computer to copy DVDs, otherwise I leave them on their oroginal mini-disks. I only ever copy DVDs when i want to give them to family members as gifts.

A dvd recorder doesn't need transfer software for the job,AFAIK..You connect a suitable cable from your camcorder to the recorder, set the recorder to accept whatever input you're using, and hit record..the software would come in if you were doing some editing, which would mean using a computer..
