Which is nicer, a fondant icing or an ordinary boiled icing? email this discussion to a friend?

I'm planning of baking a cake for my kid's birthday. She wanted to have Little Mermaid as a theme for the party. And I am thinking whether to use fondant icing or an old fashion icing? But I am really not familiar on how to make a fondant and am afraid that it might turn out bad. She'll be celebrating it five days from now and I don't know if I will be able to buy a ready made rolled fondant as it is not available in our country. So which do you think is nicer to have instead, fondant icing or just the old fashioned boiled icing?

I prefer regular icing. Fondant looks nice but I don't care to eat it and have found most children peel it off the cake before eating it. I have made many fabulous cakes NONE of them were with fondant, but all were enjoyed. I don't even like wedding cake with fondant.. there just seems to be something fake about it. Oh I don't know, I just prefer regular icing. lol
Good luck and Brightest blessings,
Mari
PS. Happy birthday to your daughter.

Personally, I'd make up decorators icing. With that you can add more detail and have control of it. Boiled icing doesn't go through a decorators tube easily and keep it's shape well. I used to make cakes like that in the picture. I'd make a bundt cake and stick in a doll and decorate it with the icing. (Bundt cakes, with the rippled effect, make great skirts lol) Even the doll can have the frosting on it to make the shirt part. I've always thought that fondant was hard to work with, maybe it's just me. I find making a decorators icing I can pipe using star tips, or whatever I want to use with it, to make the designs all over. Sounds like your little one is going to LOVE her birthday this year!! (I just made a Thomas the Train cake for my grandson lol) Have fun!!

hmmmm i'm not really familiar with decorators icing on how to make it. But I am thinking of sticking to the old style of baking a birthday cake. I heard so much that fondants really don't taste good? Do they? And yes, my kid is really excited on having her birthday party. I just want to surprise her with a special cake this year. Thanks so much!
