Important debate today...

As all out bizzarre as this is going to sound comming from me, I'm not such a fan of this bill. It certainly isn't the worst thing they could do by a long shot, but I am stil hesitant. Why you ask? though I am to, "all about the 2nd amendment", very much so in fact, but I am also all about the 10th amendment and this seems to me at least to be flirting with violating it. That being said, I haven't seen the actual text of the bill so I don't know exactly how they word it, wether or not it is up to the individual states to allow concealed carry through their state, what federal laws it is striking down, is it FORCING a state to allow a concealed carrier to carry through a state or simply ALLOWING it if the state chooses to, etc. I'm still kinda on the fence with this one.

Many states have reciprocity agreements with other states and will recognize concealed carry permits from outside of their jurisdiction as you've indicated. Other states simply allow permit holders to transport an unloaded, secured weapon in their vehicle as they travel through without the agreement. Although the interstate transportation of a firearm is under the jurisdiction of federal law according to the U.S. code, the individual states do currently have the right to set their own rules if they're not one of the reciprocity states. My feelings about this may be a little bit stronger than xfahctor's at this point because I haven't seen this bill either but I don't believe that the federal government should be able to overrule any existing state's standards.

The Constitution is the Supreme law of the land, it supersedes state law. After the Civil War freed slave, turned new citizens were having there liberties striped from them by southern state governments. One liberty taken away was blacks could not own firearms, yet the 14th amendment guarantees everyone Constitutional right across the board. Now I would like state themselves just to respect some one's individual right to self defense no matter where they might roam.

As I understand the law now, when I go to another state where I do not have a concealed weapons permit, I merely 'unconceal' my weapon. I put it in my trunk or whatever is required to be in compliance with that state's law. I am not sure I understand the actual purpose of this bill.

I just returned from a road trip through several states and in on the way back, I discovered that my husband had brought along his gun and his concealed weapon permit. I wondered what would happen if were stopped for a traffic violation or accident and what if anything would have happened because of carrying it around. I think that it should be allowed. If you are approved to carry one in one state, why would it be illegal to carry it concealed in another? By the way I went from Florida, through Georgia, then South and North Carolina, so I really don't know what the laws say in those states. I'll be sure to check though next time we travel.

While gun advocates are understandably for such a law, foursox, there is also the possibility for great misuse of it. Speaking from the vantage point of someone who does not own or carry a gun, I feel justified in saying that the probability for an increase in criminal activity might be a downside of such a law. I, for one, am not eager to return to the days of the Wild West! Just my personal opinion. BTW, the law did not pass.

Actually, they did cover it and I understand the law didn't pass. I'm glad it didn't because I think states' rights should win out in a case like this.
