What kind of behaviour would you expect from your local church leader?

Organised religions seem to set much store by the head of the local church and is maybe seen as someone to be feared or respected. I would also expect that his congregation expect him to lead by example. So what habits would you expect to see in your local religious leader? As an example the main church here is Greek orthodox. I've never seen such human religious leaders who blend into the community so well. They walk round in their long black robes, they marry and have children, they smoke, they drink, they laugh. They even make kamaki. They make their church a jolly place and encourage the congregation to wander in and out for cigarettes or a chat and wander back in. The church is full for funerals and baptisms. Incense wafts and candles glow. Does this bear any resemblance to what you expect to see in your religion or church leader?

my mom has a priest who comes to the house for her (she is disabled) and he dresses casual-no frock or anything. i must admit i was a bit surprised-i almost didn't answer the door when he first came, because i did not recognize him as a priest. he seems like a nice guy,but i was rather surprised some aren't wearing vestments anymore.

Hi scarlet woman, that's nice that your mums priest visits her when she is disabled and probably welcomes the company. I remember once in England the local church guy calling round uninvited and expecting us to join his church which I totally disagreed with, even if it stood out in a small community that i had no intention of joining in.

yea,it seems to be cheering for her. her church has no chair access (it's too old of a place to be changed) so they started coming to the house.

The church I use to belong to was Evangelical and so many would say it was quite liberal with its appearance. The Pastor of the church would regularly wear casual clothes, in fact he never wore any of the garments you would associate with a man of the cloth. There was no real set format to services and although the pastor would have a sermon pre-planned it would often be replaced on the spur of the moment depending on how the spirit was moving through the church and there was always laughter filling the air. Quite often the services were handed over to the youth of the church to encourage the next generation to participate more and to feel at home. If you saw the pastor walking down the street you would have no idea that he was a man of the cloth and is one of the most approachable people I know. He's married with children and in fact his son went onto become a pastor as well working in the youth ministry. I would say that the emphasis that the pastor put on the church was to make it as approachable and as normal as possible, rather than following the strict rules which many religions follow with set services and religious garments. So in some ways what you experience is quite similar to the church I use to attend except that smoking was definitely not encouraged. As for drinking, well I have shared a pint with the pastor before but as you may expect it was only the one as being a man of the cloth he had great self control. I think in this day and age the church in many ways needs to adapt to modern times, as in the way people often perceive it as a stuffy institution for old people and so need to prove it isn't. But in doing so I believe that they also have to stay true to what the Bible says rather than compromising those beliefs. Now to show my complete ignorance what is kamaki?

For me a church leader should practice what he preaches.......as many a time we see that preachers say you should forgive but then they themselves fail to do that.......but some where I also agree that they too are humans and they are bound to make mistakes.......so it does not really matter !!!! But then I somewhere don't feel that a religious leader should smoke, drink and do such things......I agree these days people are more attracted towards it and will attract more people towards such groups.......but then what about the bible????? the bible says don't do all the above things.........so if they encourage doing all that then I don't really think they are professing Christ....... There are many ways to attract people towards god......like in my case, I am a roman catholic........I don't really like the way the worship is conducted, it is all very monotonous, and the preaching is not really solid they all seem scripted and seems like the priest just reads it from somewhere....... So I came across "Charismatic Prayers" where prayers are conducted by dancing, clapping hands, and live music......now that's what attracted me and got me more closer to god.......some people consider them mad but then I just love it......it brought me more closer to god....... So for me any religious leader who is successful in getting me closer towards god(in a just way) would be apt...... Nice discussion !!!!

I want the religious leader of the temple of worship I go to, to be one that shows me with respect and makes me feel like I have a place in their place of worship. I do not like when those in religious power act as if they are beyond any kind of reproach.

Hi machizmo, that certainly sounds like a sensible approach.
