Are there any mechanics out there? |
|
I am trying to fix up an old ford pickup truck that has a 302 engine. I've got it all together but can't get it to crank. It is firing and the fuel pump is working. The gas gets to the carburator and into the intake manifold but doesn't get to the spark plugs. I've replaced the plugs, wires, points, condenser, rotor button, distributor cap, and coil. Does anyone have an idea of what could be causing it to refuse to start? I really appreciate any help anyone can offer.

2. stephcjh (22850) | 5 months ago | I am not a mechanic but I have had my fair share of vehicle problems over the years. I would try to replace the fuel filter. That could be the problem since you replaced the other things.

savak03 (2205) | 5 months ago | I appreciate the thought but the fuel filter is apparently okay since the gas gets to the carburator okay. That was a good thought though because usually if fuel is not going where it is supposed to it is either a fuel pump or filter problem.

3. James72 (6971) | 5 months ago | Have you checked the compression and timing? Aside from these areas and fuel pressure issues, all other things seem to have been mentioned already. My immediate assumption would've been problems with the fuel pump or lines, but you've said that this has all been checked? Spark plugs generally become messed up from leaking oil seals, a rich fuel mixture, or cylinder head problems that cause engine coolant to get into the combustion chamber. Checking all of these parts and their interlinking lines may help.

savak03 (2205) | 5 months ago | The compressions okay but I think we ruled out a timing problem because it was not backfiring while trying to start. But maybe if it was only a little off it would not backfire but not start either. Thanks for the direction.

savak03 (2205) | 5 months ago | The spark plugs are new and yes we gapped them. It is a straight stick but the problem is we have nothing powerfull enough to push it. We are driving a ranger and this truck is a big truck with doolies. We've got fire but the gas doesn't get to the plugs. I'm beginning to think the valves are stuck. What do you think?

Aliceinwebland (5183) | 5 months ago | I may have been using the wrong word savak. It's called a stopcock/stop tap and is normally found beside the water tank and pipes. It's used when work needs to be done on the taps etc at the sinks and bath.

savak03 (2205) | 5 months ago | I have been known to threaten a few cars with a match in the gas tank and one I threatened to drive off into the Saint John's River. It kept overheating so I thought I would see if the river would be enough water for it. I have never really followed through with any of my threats though.
I might be able to help with the computer problem. I've been fooling around with them since the TRS 80's came out. What seems to be the problem?

7. plunketear (1241) | 5 months ago | James and others have covered some very impressive bases here, savak.
- are you certain that when you replaced the wires, they are all in the right spot? just two out is BIG - confirm coil wire is making contact at both ends. - confirm that they are all seated at the plugs. This is a 'feel'...you likely know what i mean, sometimes requiring wiggling end til you can feel the recvr part of the wire, find the exact top of the plug - consider putting old distributor cap and rotor and coil back in place to help rule out a faulty new part - is gas stale? this will stump the most optimistic mechanic - if intake/ exhaust valves are stuck open it will spin as if very little compression, has the engine sat for a long time since running? - if so, u gotta get that old gas out of the carb, hopefully hasn't varnished main jets that would fuel starve - but u did say u getting gas at the plugs right? - what else...something and now i forget what i was thinking earlier.
is it spinning fast? good battery and connections? ESPECIALLY AT the starter? often overlooked when slow crank happens
u say u can't get it to crank, but that isn't what you meant right? u meant 'fire'? - cuz if engine not turning over, well gotta go in dif direction, let us know, confirm
oh - if gas not getting to plugs, any chance a mouse has built a nest in the breather box - or actiually right down inside the carb entrance to the intake man?? I have seen this believe it or not. MICE!

savak03 (2205) | 5 months ago | This truck had been sitting up for some time. In fact the motor was locked up when we started. Water had condensed in the top of the pistons. We took the spark plugs out and pumped out all the water and oiled the pistons then rocked the crank back and forth until we freed up the engine. We replaced all the electrical parts, points, plugs and so on and got the engine to roll over. It seemed to have compression but got less with time. Then the battery cables started to get exceedingly hot until they melted. We replaced them but now the starter seems to be fried. We are wondering if we should invest in a starter or just cut our losses.
