Have you ever bought a telescope?

I always wanted a telescope since my childhood. Now ,telescopes are very expensive and the cheap ones are not worth buying as they can spoil ones eyesight. It was only in my 39th year that i finally managed to get my hands on one. I went to work in one of the Gulf countries in 1983 and after working for a year i managed to save quite a bit of money. One day when i was passing through the market i saw a telescope displayed in one of the shop windows. I immediately went inside with my friends and enquired about it, the price and specifications etc. It was reasonably priced and of Japanese make. It was a 60mm diameter refractor and for a novice like me, perfect. I also bought a pair of binoculors of Pentax make which were pretty good quality and again reasonably priced. Now i was the proud possessor of 2 astronomical devices and i spent6 years in happy night sky observations. When i finally returned to my country and city i found that the sky was no longer conducive to observation because of heavy pollution of light and other things. so sadly i sold the telescope to a friend but have still retained my binocs. What about you my friends, do you have a telescope? Let me know and if so how you are using it?

Unfortunately I do not have one. I have owned several in the past. Like you, I was in the Middle East during the 80's. I am hoping to get a new one soon from Orion. My last one I had, I donated in to the Denver Astronomic Society since I had to move and was limited as to what I could pack. I'll let you know when I get the new one.

Thanks benhilo. Unfortunately in India we do not get quality `scopes and to buy from USA it is impossible since we cannot buy any foreign currency according to the govt rules so even if i wanted to i would not be able to purchase one.The only way i can have a telescope is if someone "gifts" me one which again is not possible. So i guess i will have to be satisfied by the binocs which is a small consolation.

I got a telescope for my son to use a couple years ago (well that was the excuse I used anyway:-)! We used it quite regularly for awhile. We are in a farming community so have great views of the sky when our weather is good. Now we only use it when there is something we want to follow. I am even using it as part of our school science projects now! Very cool.
