Well let me start off with, that we have lived in this 2 bedroom apartment for almost 4 years now. We pay 425.00 a month which is not worth it(my opinion). The tolite does not flush we have a small old fashion stove where you can only cook one thing at a time in the oven and gosh forbid the top has 4 burners but you can only cook with 2 pans on there at a time. So there for our food ends up being cold sometimes because by the time we get all the food cooked. Of course we can tell the manager of place about our problems and he don't do anything. Then the building was sold to a new person and they told the manager that he will be in the mist of getting things settled to raise the rent. The new LandLord has not even bothered to stop by the place to see if it is worth raising. If anything the place should be remodled for the price we are paying now. A new tolite would be great, and new stove. Plus the walls are not even finished with paint. Our front door lets cold air in when it is winter time. We have on little furnace which does not heat the whole place let alone it is not an updated furnace for us to be using. Then the lady that lives in the upstairs apartment that is attached to the building that we live in is paying the same amount as us yet her place was recently remodled with a new fridge, stove,Tub,carpet, and wall paint. How is that right that the new landlord is trying jack up our rent without giving us a new tolite and stove. We are still in the middle of finding a new place but that is not easy where we live at all because there are not many 3 bedroom apartments for rent. Plus when we do find a place we are told that we will be the ones to get it and then all of sudden we are told that there is someone that is more in need. I just feel like nothing can ever go good for us. Do you ever feel like this? Happy Mylotting

I guess we all feel a bit hopeless, at times. I understand your frustration with the landlord situation. Unfortunately, I don't see too many admirable landlords around. They all seem to be greedy. But, the good thing about renting is that you can always move. I'm not sure where you live, but I would love to pay the amount that you do for rent. And, it sounds strange to me that apartments are being given to people based on need. Usually they go to the one who is quickest on the draw (the quickest to draw the money out of their bank account and give it to the landlord). Your situation is not fair. The women upstairs is living far better than you for the same price, at the same location. If you can't find a place to move to, I would find someone to complain to. Housing court, housing association, a social service agency, the management ... somebody. Maybe if you made some of the repairs yourself you could take it out of your rent. The sad part about it is, if you moved, sounds like they would have to remodel anyways - before the next person took the apartment.

That is what I was starting to think. I wish that just once someone would say OK you get the place no matter what. I figure that before anyone wants to take the place they would have to do a lot of remodeling before someone decides to take the place. I figure that if I want my family to live healthy and comfotable that we might have to complain or do the remodeling and just send the bill to the landlord so that they take it out of our rent. Where at do you live? Happy Mylotting

I'm in New England (in the States). And, the rent is ridiculous up here. A lot of landlords charge twice what you pay for your same apartment. I'm talking with bad paint job, dysfunctional toilet, stove and all. It's ridiculous. The landlord's get very angry when they rent these places out and don't get their money exactly how they want it from the tenants. But, the landlords don't want to do anything for their rent. The just want to come around and collect it. That's it. I don't know where you are. But, I wonder if the woman who you speak of, that has the better apartment, is getting help paying her rent. Such as from a government sponsored program. Because out here, the landlords kiss the tenants butt if the government is paying their rent. (Section 8)

I'm in NE too and I agree...rents are outrageous. If I were to move into a place like you described...it'd be at least 600.00 ...nothing included easily. You really can't even touch a decent place for under 700.00 here plus utilities and I'm talking one bedroom little teeny apartments. Anything larger...you are looking at a lot more money. Here...you maybe could pitch a tent for 425.00...if you don't have a good view as they charge for views here.

We've been in the situation of living somewhere that was less then livable. We got through it by telling ourselves that it was temporary and working toward finding a new place. It's not easy and takes some time but I'm sure you'll find somewhere better. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**

Hello, that is very much true. In fact we might have found a new place. It's not written in stone yet but we go to see the place tomorrow. This place is very well kept up to date. Plus what is a big plus is that we do not have to worry about gas. All we have to worry about is Electric and Rent and of course our internet and phone that has cable with it. So I just hope that all goes well for us. Which I think it will because I was told that the way this place rents apartments to people is by being refered by a resident of the building. Which is good because my sister refered us to the people. I am so excited, It may not be off the main drag but it is so much better then this place that we are in. I will let you all know how it goes when we are ddone looking at it. Happy Mylotting

Well, I will say that 425.00 is dirt cheap rent and I say that because I live in low income housing and I pay according to my income and I pay over 500 per month...almost 600. Still...my place is kept up and not handled by some slumlord which is what it sounds like you are dealing with. The laws vary from state to state but most states do have standards that the landlords are held accountable for. You should go to your local city hall and ask for a list of the housing codes for rentals. I believe that the toilet has to flush and the stove has to work. Unfortunately if he does get all these things fixed....your rent will more than likely be raised. My daughter is looking at apartments and a room with a shared kitchen, bathroom and living room is 550.00 per month plus utilitys. A one bedroom apartment runs anywhere from 600 to 900 per month. Like I said...I'm subsidized and I am paying almost 600.00 for a small 2 bdrm and also pay my own utilities.

Well I know where we live that is actually pretty high compared to other places that surrounds our town. I know this one house that we lived at once we payed 375.00 and that was for a 3 bedroom home with a large dinning room and a large yard. So I am not sure but I was told that the people that owns this building is really greedy when it comes to money. Because I was told that they both work along with collecting almost 1,000 dollars in rent from us and the upstairs lady. To me that is a lot of money between their jobs and the rent money. But it's no biggy because if all goes well we might get a different place that is worth the money. I hope that your daughter finds a good deal and good luck with your living situation.
