Question About IP Addresses.

Do IP addresses depend on location, individual computers, or internet service providers? If my husband and I use two different computers at home, do we have the same IP address? If I use my laptop at home, and then take it to the coffee shop and use it there, will the IP address change? If two people are in the same office, but use different service providers, will their IPs be the same or different?

Hi danishcanadian, Here is my knowledge: 1st question: It depends on internet service providers and location too. If it is a individual computer but connected in a LAN (Local Area Network) It depends on the LAN provided by the service provider. 2nd question: If you use the same hib to connect your 2 computers the IP adresses will be different. Each and every computer on a network will have a different IP addresses like we have our telephone numbers. 3rd question: There are 2 types of IP adresses static and dynamic. If it is dynamic your IP changes when you do to a coffee shop from your home. 4tth question: As I said before, IP addresses are like telephone numbers. They can never be the same. P.S: There are private IP and Public IPs. Like a single phone for a company with many extentions. A company may have many private IP adresses (Intranet)within but have a single IP address outside(internet). hoope you get something in this....

Different computer have different IP address. This is for the router to recognise internally which computer is which. However, there could be one outgoing IP address for the 2 computers in your home if you are sharing the same router. So to some, both computers are using the same IP address. Different service providers likely have different IP but again, it all depends on the service providers using fixed or dynamic IP. Some service providers recycle IP address.

Your ISP will provide your modem with a IP address. If you connect directly to the modem then your pc gets that same address. However if you use a router between your pc and the modem so you can have more than one computer on the internet at a time, the router gets the address from the ISP and then in turn provides each computer it is connected to with a unique ip address. Some addresses are static and some are dynamic. Most ISPs around here tend to give you a semi static address...that it is it changes once a month or so. Your router can be configured to give a certain MAC address a certain IP address. The MAC address the number assigned by the manufacturer to your Wireless Card or your Network card or your modem. If two people in the office use the internet from two different isp's then the ip address would be different. If they are on the same network and access different isp's then the ips are still different or one of the computers on the local network will start popping up messages about IP Address conflicts. You can tell your router that 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.25 get to access the internet via this "port" and 192.168.1.26 to whatever can access the internet from another one.... and that some cant. When you do that its a more expensive router or even as far as a managed network switch...which is getting to the point where i started falling asleep in class because it bored me! Hope this helps.

there are two types of IP addresses static and dynamic. Old dial-up modems had dynamic addresses everytime you dialed you had different IP-s. Today most of us have DSL internet with router, this router has its own IP, it doesn't matter how many people are connected on this router, b'cause router's IP is global IP and yours is local IP. Providers have the hosts of IP-s. IP consists of four numbers, first two number is the host, for example 89.232.154.22: 89.232 is you providers host and 154.22 is particular clients address.

For your 1st question : yes. 2nd: depend on internet provider. Mostly it will be different, even if u r using LAN (network cable that connect your computer to his). 3rd: again, depend on your provider. If you are using provider with static IP, it will never change no matter how far you brought your computer. But if u are using hotspot in coffee shop, ofcourse it will change :D 4th. if they use different provider, their IP definitely different. The rest already made cleared by other comments.
