The wallabies are getting whacky. Authorities in the Australian state of Tasmania report wallabies are getting "high as a kite" by snacking on legally grown opium. Tasmania Attorney-General Lara Giddings says the whacked-out wallabies are hopping around in circles, making a mess of the crops. The Mercury newspaper quotes Giddings telling a hearing that the kangaroo-like creatures are a problem for the opium industry. Tasmania supplies about 50 percent of the world's raw material for morphine and related painkillers

I don't know if that's funny or tragic... It must be a funny sight,that of a drugged wallabie from eating opium, but for them being killed for destroying the crops while being high is not that funny any more... Maybe they should install some fences or something like that to prevent the kangaroos from entering the crops.

I thought there had to be something that could be done to keep this from happening. It just seems like a senseless happening. I volunteer at our local humane society and it breaks my heart to see an animal sick or hurt. I can't help but think that this has to have some kind of negative effect on the animals.

I didn't either until I heard about this on the news. The report I heard didn't give any indication of what they authorities were going to do to correct the problem. You'd think they'd put up a fence or something right? My biggest concern is the health risks to the wallabies! We all know what prescription drug abuse can do to humans!
