Arroyo's splurge |
|
I was surfing the net when I came across an article in Yahoo Philippines, regarding Arroyo's recent dinner splurge. Allegedly, this woman, along with her entourage spent $20,000 (almost 1 million pesos) on a single dinner in Manhattan, New York.
Although this wasn't surprising... I just felt embarrassed that she's the president... that she dared to wine and dine in this manner when millions of Filipinos are in hunger. How dare she used the money we payed for our tax just for her lavish lifestyle!!!
To fellow Mylot kababayans... what do you think about this, huh?

1. jazzbabe (101) | 4 months ago | I've also came across this article this morning. But before I reacted, I searched for the other side of the story, and voila, I've came across another article explaining that the previous article was 'grossly exaggerated'. It was said that Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez hosted the dinner and footed the bill and that no Juan de la Cruz tax was used. I just hope this explanation is an honest to goodness one.

kryzell (559) | 4 months ago | I agree. I am hoping that this Rep. Romualdez really paid the bill (how generous of him). Although I still am not totally sold with this explanation because if ever she did paid using taxpayers' money... this isn't the forst one, for sure.

| 2. agilangpinoy (35) | 4 months ago | Hi kryzell! I was not able to read the article. But based on what you said, it is not right nor decent for any public servant, especially the president to use public funds for a lavish, one night meal even if the whole entourage is with her. $20,000 on a one dinner at Manhattan? wow. Public funds should be used decently, appropriately, and conscientiously. I also read what jazzbabe said. If this is true, then well, maybe somebody paid for their bills. Somebody very rich. question: did this guy pay with his own money or public money? hehehe. I wish I have a rich friend like that! LOL! Assuming that the rich guy paid from his own pocket, we must also be aware of people, our kababayans, who are hungry and poor and suffering. Now is not the time to be lavish. By the way, isn't public service and true leadership equated with servant-leadership? Well, that's just me thinking!

kryzell (559) | 4 months ago | Even if there are other writings explaining that the money spent for that dinner wasn't from the Philippines' tax, even if others mentioned that she has her rights to eat in such a place, not to mention a very expensive dinner, it still feels so wrong for me. I don't know if I am just being too judgemental...

4. aseretdd (6843) | 4 months ago | Well, i don't really like GMA... but when i heard about this piece of news... i started searching for other articles about it... and found out that the Filipino taxpayers' money was not used... since someone else hosted the dinner and footed the bill...
President Arroyo is smart enough not to make such a mistake because she knows that all eyes are on her right now... it is best that we look at the two sides of the coin before we make any harsh judgement because even if we do not like her as a person... it is not right to judge her based on one sided facts...

jules67 (1890) | 4 months ago | If I remember it right, the person who footed the bill holds a position in Congress, Mr. Romualdes? I sure hope he does not reimburse it from the taxpayer's money.

|
|
kryzell (559) | 4 months ago | LOL!!! Yeah... I am also hoping that this Mr. Romualdes didn't use public funds for this dinner.
| |
|
|
aseretdd (6843) | 4 months ago | Well, Romualdez is filthy rich... but i guess dining in a posh restaurant was not a wise decision... since there are indeed a lot of families who are currently living in poverty here in the Philippines...

5. wergild (143) | 4 months ago | Downright insensitive and downright criminal. I mean she actually ate 10,000 dollars steak and gulp down 50,000 dollar wine? Due that amount alone is enough to feed a small shanty town with food supplies that will last for a month.
I just dont get how our president and her stooges sleep well at night? Do they really wake up in the middle of the night, sweating and apprehensive that millions are hungry and suffering? Do they go, " Oh man another one of my poor country man cannot eat or got to school, I better come up with a solution tomorrow." or they just go, " sorry about your damn luck stupid voters, I got six years to waste your taxes. After my term you can go to hell hungry while I die with caviar on my mouth!".
Criminal just downright criminal!

kryzell (559) | 4 months ago | I tried to look at the good qualities that she might have, just so, I won't be too embarrassed that she's the president of our country. But everytime I try, i seem to be losing reasons to like her.

7. jules67 (1890) | 4 months ago | It is so sad that even to the last few months of her administration, she still continues to exhibit insensitivity to her constituents. It is embarassing that the Philippines has been on the front page of New York post. It does not bring honor to the Philippines.

kryzell (559) | 4 months ago | She just can't help herself. No matter how she tries to be modest... she still fails. As mentioned earlier, nobody can deprive her of this right to dine out, what I didn't like about it, is the timing, and the attention they caused.

8. incredibleDNA (1085) | 4 months ago | I've watched on news and blogged about this one as well on my own site. Based from what I heard/seen, the money spent on that lavish dining is actually a treat from Cong. Romualdez. Romualdez is a relative of the Marcoses, so it's totally not surprising for him to have that kind of amount for him to treat the other officials on that dine event.
Though it may not seem appropriate knowing that there are lots of Filipinos who are suffering from hunger while the head of the country is out and having some lavish dining in New York. It looks like she is really insensitive.

kryzell (559) | 4 months ago | What more that COng. Romualdez? I assume that he's earning around what Arroyo does... how could he have paid for that dinner? No matter how they twist the story to make it look like Arroyo is innocent... her, being with such companions only proves that... birds of the same feather, flock together...
