How many calories in a day?

Does anyone really know how many calories we need in a day? I have been trying to eat six small meals and keep each one at about 300 calories. The problem is that some items (like beans and rice) fill me up but don't have a lot of calories. That seems good, but then I am starving later and I tend to eat anything that doesn't bite me first! I am pretty inactive through the day although I run 3-5 miles in the mornings.... what is the right calorie count for us old people? (I am nearly 50)

Hi macdlingolinger, I don't really think that counting calories matters at all unless you are on some kind of strict diet. Just eating healthily which you have said you are doing now, combined with exercise, should be fine to stay fit. I've never counted a calorie in my life and have been the same weight all the time but don't eat junk food. One thing though, don't ever get the idea that you are old, it's all in the mind.

You're right it is all in the mind!! I am trying to cut out some of the junk food I had begun eating since I've been in this stressful situation for the last year. Hopefully I will succeed this week. So far so good!!!
thanks.... just trying to lose that last 5-10 pounds is all!

Hi, I always get confused trying to convert pounds to kilos, but it doesn't sound so much. But definitely just cut out the junk food and don't think about calories. I've lost four kilos I didn't need to lose in the last few weeks just by having no appetite from the extreme heat but I won't use junk food to put them back on, but if it cools down a bit I may be able to boil up some new potatoes to throw on the inevitable salad.

In general, adults need at least 1500 kcal per day of energy to maintain bodily functions, this is because even if you lay motionless, your body will still need to maintain body temperature, heart and lung function and brain operation. Basal metabolic consumption due to inter-individual height, weight, age, differences vary. A normal intake of total calories a day should be 2000 calories, movement can be appropriately increased. Vegetables, fruits contain a lot of vitamins and minerals is essential to add anything physical energy. If you are 6-11 copies of daily consumption of carbohydrates (the equivalent of each piece of bread), then you should be eating at least 3-5 vegetables (when in the pot each lettuce) and 2-4 portions of fruit (per an equivalent to a medium-sized apple).

Thanks for the information. I have been shooting for around 1800 calories a day. Sometimes though I still get really hungry if I don't space it out right. I try to eat several small meals throughout the day!
