A friend of mine is studying abroad now, and she said she received a grant for her studies. Can you explain about grants?
What is the difference between a grant and a scholarship?
Thanks you!

Most of the time, a grant is given to someone by a non-profit organization (ex.: the government). Grants can be given to many different people, not just college students. Some examples are victims of natural disasters. Scholarships, on the other hand, is specifically geared towards students attending college.
So basically, a grant can be given to anyone, not just college students. Scholarships are directed towards college students only.
However, for both grants and scholarships, you are not expected to pay the money back like a student loan.

Hope this information helped you understand this difference more.

That is true and grand is much better for me than scholarship. As you said, grants may be given through writing proposal to some private organization, foundation or private individual. If your proposal is okay for them, they will give you the amount you requested and it is for you to spend it but sometimes they require you of some report or receipts if the amount is big amounts. Grant is given to some individual, groups, or institution that meet that criteria.

I dunno really know about the difference between the two, because i have not been given either one before.. haha=D BUt i think, scholarship is given by government to see one through their studies till graduating from university.. IT's like a recognition for their results in school..

While grant, might be just sponsoring, i guess?? And that, it can be given to anybody, not just those top students in school.. hehe

i am not sure but i think the grants are given to institutions or organizations to be utilized in their field of activity. scholarship is given to individuals for educational or research purpose. for example a research project would receive a grant whereas researchers involved in the project get scholarship.

Hi srikandi, you might already be confused with all the definitions. Actually, as you can see, different people give different opinions about grant and scholarship. I've looked up Cambridge Dictionary and it says:

Grant = a sum of money given by the government to a person or an organisation for a specific purpose.
Scholarship = a sum of money given by a school, college, university, organisation to pay for the studies of a person with great ability but little money

Generally, this means that a grant is given by the governemnt to your friend for her studies. It does not require students to repay the government later. On the other hand, a scholarship is for the poor who are good in studies but could not afford to further their studies. For this category, recipients must pay back the organisation or government that gave them the scholarship.

Whether it's a grant or a scholarship, there will be some kind of requirements or else every one will be able to get them easily.

A grant is money that is given by a non-profit organization that will generally be tax exempt. One of the best examples of this organization is the government. However,, corporations or foundations may also provide grants to students as well. Grants will generally be given for a project, and the student will be expected to report information about the project to the donor.

Scholarships will require students to requirements, both before and after they've obtained it.Most of these scholarships will require students to have a minimum GPA, and they may also require them to take a certain number of credit hours within the the first 12 months of their schooling. While some scholarships are based on gender, others are based on the field the student is majoring in. The key difference between scholarships and grants is that scholarships tend to have more rigid requirements for selection, and they are specifically geared towards those who are entering college.
