Arg, Grrr, Whine... A rant about moving email this discussion to a friend?

I have to move.

I don't mind the actual moving part so much. I love hanging pictures and arranging furniture. I don't even mind packing so much because it gives a gal an opportunity to get rid of all of her old crap filling up the dark spots of her closet.

I hate the finding a place, impressing the potential landlord, trying to figure out when the appropriate moment to ask when to sign the lease and pay the deposit and first months rent.

Everyone suspects a scam artist so, even when looking at listings that seem genuine half the time they are posted by jerks trying to steal your money.

I hate it. It is making me certifiable.

Arg!

If anyone has any tips for making the process simpler I would GREATLY appreciate the advice.

Yes, unfortunately nowadays both the landlord, and the tenant are worried about being scammed.

I would suggest just being open and honest. People who are trying to scam someone don't come off sincere. If it seems like they are putting on an act, then maybe they are. I think that it is important that everyone is as open as possible. If you have had problems in the passed with landlords, even if it was because you didn't pay your rent, or you had a jerk for an ex, just be honest. People appreciate that more than anything, and then they will open up to you.

Good luck in searching for a new place!

I understand your position! It is exciting to move into a new place and re-invent/re-design your living area, but such a bunch of stress to get there! If i were looking for a new apartment, i would totally want to check out the references and talk to some previous and currant tenents to find out how satisfied they are with their landlord, just as they chedck out your references before allowing you to move in! It would totally suck to get stuck in a lease with a landlord who doesn't take care of his side of the contract or who is just a pain to work with. When i am looking for a place to live, i usually find it thruogh word of mouth, as opposed to looking in papers and stuff, which makes it a little easier, as if people are telling you their building has an apartment open or something, it is usually a little easier to trust the situation. I understand in bigger areas this might be harder.

Good Luck On Your Move.

Hi, you have my sympathy.

I am now at the 32nd address that I have had in my adult life. We have been here 2 and a half years, and I never want to move again. I am not a great fan of the city where I am now living, and work is impossible to find at the moment, but giving up and moving again is simply not on the agenda.

Anything to make it simpler? Geographically I am in the wrong place to tell you anyway, but it strikes me that everyone is trying to get their cut, and nobody wants to reduce any costs in this area.

That is so very true. There are way to many scam artists out there. I myself just ran into a situation with a potentially new landlord who made a verbal (yes, verbal isn't always that good either) arrangement and then welched out on it. We were looking at a 5 bedroom 2 bath house for $500 per month. The landlord told us that he wanted us to come back a few days later as he didn't have a lease with him and he wanted to remove his stuff from the premises. He said just to give him that couple of days and we would pay him at the time we signed the lease. The very next day he called me to tell me not to bother coming, he had forgotten to take down the For Rent sign and was over there cleaning his stuff out when someone came by to take a look at the house. He stated that he had made sure to carry a lease with him and since that person came by and said they were interested he went ahead and rented it to them. I was furious as we definately needed 4 bedrooms but who would pass up a 5 bedroom at that cheap of a price.

hi my tip for making the process simpler is to throw out
everything you have not used in a donkey;s age, and dont
let any family member bring it back. why pack stuff you
will probably throw away anyway. also get plenty of different
size boxes. also please please label clearly the contents of
each box in a visible place, it will keep you from going
into hysterics later. other than that. hire someone to do]
if for you. I know, thats way too expensive, right. I personally
hate to move, I repeat I hate to move.gr gr gr.
