I read this from yahoo news that JFK sister, Rosemary, was institutionalized due to the wrong medical procedure, lobotomy, performed on her when she was 23, according to the news, it was performed at the approval of her father to correct mental retardation, the procedure went wrong.
But I was wondering why, with all the power attached to the Kennedys, they did not sue the doctors who performed the procedure?it was a clear evidence of medical malpractice. Anyway, that was long time ago and Rosemary died last 2005 at the age of 88. But I was just curious with this case because there's a line that intrigued me more in the wikipedia when I read the story about Rosemary Kennedy:"it was the biggest cover-up medical story" (wikipedia). my Gosh!

Joe Kennedy knew the risks and wanted to doctors to do it. He ordered the operation with out his wifes knowledge it has been rummored. During that time period this was an operation used to cure many "Mental Illnesses". It involves cutting or removing part of the front of the brain. If done on the righ person and successfully the person becane happy rather than depressed. It has to do with cutting off some of the "emotions" of the Brain. More times than not the person ended up a a near zombie. alive but with no emotions and not able to care for themselves.

Mental illnesses have been treated in many ways, ways which now have become obsolete. Our defination of mental illness has also changed over the years. Today a moody or defiant person is not considered mentally ill. One more such story come to my mind. Author Paulo Coelho was institutionalised because he wanted to become a writer! Institutionalising people who wanted to pursue unusual careers was quite common in Brazil. Paulo coelho wrote the book 'Veronica decides to die' because he always wanted to write something about this topic.
