OMG--I Don't Believe It...It Was THAT Long Ago? |
| |
| Just watching something on the news that forty years ago one of the greatest music festival occurred-----WOODSTOCK and I'm thinking...crap was it THAT long ago--talk about feeling like an old fart I was only thirteen years old when Woodstock happened and way to young to have been there in person, but have seen the Woodstock movie (both versions...theatrical and extended) For those of you too young...the Woodstock Festival took place August 15th to August 18th 1969 and was coined the festival of three days of peace, love and music as it was the largest ever get together of people recorded for a music festival. Originally only 5,000 people were expected at that now famous Max Yasgur's 600 acre farm.....instead over half a million people showed up. Considering the number of people that were there, it really WAS a peaceable celebration...no fights, no murders, everyone was mellow--oh course maybe since most people were stoned out of their minds... . Woodstock epitomized that whole hippie, peace and love movement I was to grow up in For more particulars of Woodstock http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodstock_Festival The list of performers is legendary and too numerous to list Grateful Dead, Crosby,Stills & Nash, Richie Havens, Ten Years After, Country Joe & the Fish, Jefferson Airplane,Santana, The Who, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, Jimi Hendrix..and on and on..one can see a full list at that link I give Can you ever imagine so many people getting together now without a scuffle, fist fight, murder? For those old enough..did you go? Do you think a Woodstock could ever be re-created again with that same mood? | | Woodstock Poster | | | | |

| | Wouldn't that be nice? Nowadays you can't get a soccer game organized without a fight, let alone a concert with that many people. Sad that everything is about money now and disputes can only be resolved with violence and stupidity. | | | | | | |

| | Hi Pye, I was too young to go to Woodstock but old enough to wish I could. I have seen some of the footage. There was another attempt at Woodstock a few years ago and I was told that it just was not the same at all. I think it would be nearly impossible to create that same atmosphere after all these years. I also heard that their were deaths in the first one due to some bad acid being passed around. I don't know how much truth there is to that. It was a cool time in our history...so many changes going on in the country at that time. | | | | | | |

| | I remember there was a 25th anniversary Woodstock event in 1994 I think, and even back then I thought..gee, it's been 25 years?? Forget who the performers were that participated but sure wouldn't have been the same anyway | | | |

| | Ya...that sounds about right. I have a good friend that went and he said it was not anything the same. The first one just happened and was not expected to turn out the way it did. You can't recreate that. | | | |

| | I wasn't born until a couple years after Woodstock. Nothing like that could ever happen today, although I would have loved to experience that level of positive energy. Some organizers tried to put on a 30th anniversary Woodstock in 1999. John Entwistle of The Who and Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead were the only musicians from the original Woodstock to appear at this version. It was dubbed "Profitstock" because of the $150 ticket price and the high prices charged for food and water. Some in the crowd became violent, started bonfires and looted ATMs and merchandise trailers. There were also at least four rapes reported and seven arrests on the last night of the concert. | | | | | | |

| | I think Woodstock first time round kind of signaled the end of the "good time" vibes of that hippie era...you later had in the same year that concert with the Rolling Stones think in Altamont, Calif were there were a bunch of murders--so that peaceful mood was destroyed then | | | |

| | And then there was the "hair" play that just preceded woodstock. I just heard a couple of weeks ago that they are doing a revival of that. I honestly don't see how they can bring back those times with the same feeling that was felt back then. There were so many changes going on and the vietnam war & womens lib...civil rights...Robert kennedy...Martin luther. There was so much passion in these musicals. There is no way you can recreate that passion...it's all different now. My aunt played in the musical "hair". I know all the lyrics...they don't have meaning today but the message does. They could use the same concept. | | | |

| | Wow! I can't believe its been that long Pye, and I feel like an old fart too. I was old enough to go but didn't. Too busy with my own life back then to care about it. I thought they tried to do this again but it didn't work, maybe I'm wrong. Oh well, too much Grunge and Rap today for these younger one's to be interested I guess. | | | | | | |

| | It does seem a long time ago, doesn't it? I was a kid when Woodstock happened (my older sister and her husband were in their 20's, but they didn't go; they were living in Seattle. They did see The Doors perform at Fillmore West, however...) Maybe the drugs contributed to the mellow attitude at Woodstock. If such a festival occurred today people would be all wired on caffeine and Red Bull and complaining that they couldn't get reception on their iPhones or Blackberries! I guess there are some big music festivals in Europe that pretty much occur without major fights or other problems, but I don't know that they have the half-million that Woodstock had. Fortunately I live in the NYC area, so I hope to go up to the Woodstock area and check out the site of the festival. And there's a nice new Bethel Arts Center up there that offers music performances, etc. | | | | | | |

| | LOL--yes the drug usage probably did contribute to the "mellow" mood back then---and you're right, they could never recreate the same "vibes" as back then...also the music has changed so much now--just think so many of the performers from then are now gone--like Hendrix | | | |

| | I can imagine lots of artists who'd be good for a Woodstock-type event. But there are a lot of reasons it couldn't happen the way it did in 1969, such as security... I can't see the authorities letting traffic to an area getting so heavy that they had to shut down a major road like the New York Thruway for miles and miles! And can you imagine trying to inspect the bags and purses of half a million people? That might take one full day, LOL. | | | |
