Would you mail a winning lottery ticket?

Last week while we were driving to Florida, just about every time we stopped for gas, I bought a lottery ticket. Now, even though I played either the Mega Millions or the Powerball game - which are multi-state games - I would still have to go back to the state I purchased the ticket if I won. OR, you have the option of mailing the ticket to the lottery board of the state to claim your prize. If I only won a little bit, I'd probably mail it. But for a big prize, I'd drive or fly down to get my winnings. That did get me to thinking though... If you did mail a multi-million dollar winning lottery ticket, how much would you insure it for? Would the post office even insure it? it would definitely be worth it to insure it if it got lost or something...
Well, none of my tickets won, so I don't have to worry about it, but what would you do?

If I won the million dollar jackpot, I wouldn't mail it in. It could get lost in mail or get stolen. I'll probably fly/drive/private jet back to the state to claim the money

Hey, you'd be able to afford it with the winnings! It would definitely be worth the trip :)

If i won a large amount i would not trust it to the postal mail. I would drive back to the state that i won it at and present it in person. I do not know if the post office would insure it, but if they did i would insure it for the amount won.

I would go back to the state also, it would be way exciting! Too bad I didn't win and don't have to worry about it after all...

I think if it was a big ticket I would take it myself. I'd be worried about it getting stolen or lost in the mail. I've had a few too many things go missing and had to fight for the insurance on them.
I'm not sure if the post office would insure it here. Here though lots of the scratch and wins are cross the prairies atleast - honestly havent been to the other side of the country to see if i can buy the same tickets there as here and claim them here!

Wow, this reminded me of the days you had to take a scratch-off back to the SAME place you bought it to cash it in. That was a pain if you had a few over different days and didn't know where you got it from. I'm glad you can cash them anywhere in the same state now...

If I won a million dollars, I would definitely drive/fly to the state to where I won. Because I wouldn't trust ANYONE with that money. Maybe except family and my bf. Plus, I would be way to excited to get my hands on that kind of money.
I don't know if USPS does any kind of insurance for that kind of money - I doubt it though. And I don't think the check is sent through mail - I think it's deposited into your account in installments. I THINK - I don't really know, I haven't won YET!
I'll let you know when I do though! ;-)

I do know that you can choose the annuity (installments) or cash (one lump sum, but less money) option. If you know anything about "Future Value of Money" you know the cash option is always the best way to go!
I'd definitely want to get that check in my hands as fast as possible too!
