Anyone ever have to do a bad book review before?

I started doing book reviews for Book Pleasures. They don't pay but you get free books and after the review is published on the website you can put it anywhere else you want.
I had three books to review at first. I did the first one which was easy because it was a very interesting book. I am now on the second one and it is going to be harder because it is boring. Not at all what I expected it to be when I read the synopsis.
Has anyone had to do a review on a bad book? How did you do it without putting down the author? I don't know how I am going to do this because I am having a hard time even reading it because it is so boring. Anyway, any suggestions?

I wish I could do that but I can't. This book review is due soon so I have to read the whole thing and then write the review. The review will be published on the book pleasures website and possibly on Amazon. I will also put it on my blog. I am just going to get through it and write the review as best as I can. :)

I have never had to write a bad review, but I have written some negative reviews of books before. In most cases they really do want your honest review and while they might not like getting negative feedback it is possible you are not even the targeted audience and the author knows they are not going to appeal to everyone's likes. I always try to still find at least one thing to praise about the book even if I give it an overall negative review.

I have never written bad or negative reviews before. All of the books I read were good boos and brought on good reviews from me. That is why this one will be so hard because I don't know how to do it without putting the author down, which I don't want to do. Thanks for your advice. :)

I've never had to do that, but it is something us writers worry about a lot lol. (meaning: a bad book review) I think I would probably have to stick to honesty. If you say you found it boring, figure out WHY you found it boring. The story line is slow, it has a strong beginning but loses it's flow. The writing seems flat because the characters aren't presented in a way that makes you care about 'what's going to happen next?' While it's hard to be non-judgemental, it's something that editors do every day. Tell why you found it hard to read, and what made you lose interest as a reader, and I'd also temper it with something I DID like about the book (good plot, good characters, whatever.)

It is actually a non-fiction book and I thought it was going to be about Angels but it is written from the point of view of the Angelic Realm. Mostly the author asks questions throughout the book and the reader is supposed to think about those questions. I am supposed to do a 400 word review on this book and I don't even understand half of it.
I will do my best to get it done. I will probably re-write it several times and I will be careful to not cut down the author too much. I don't want to hurt her feelings. I guess I am just not the targeted audience for this type of book. :)

Ah yes, I have done bad book reviews before. Think I did one for Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki before. I pointed out why I thought it was bad ( it's just repeating the same ideas over and over again and most of the facts, if you call them that, are just wrong and inaccurate) and recommended another book in the same genre for people to read (Think and Grow Rich)I don't think I managed it without putting down the author though :P

That is what I am afraid I will do, put down the author and I don't want to do that. She will be reading my review and I the person who runs the review site says not to run down the author too much. I guess I better just finish the book as hard as that will be and sit down and think about how I am going to go about doing this. Thanks for your response. :)
