Brand New or Second Hand Phones? email this discussion to a friend?

Well, if it were my choice, of course I'd choose a brand new phone than a second hand phone but, with times getting challenging yet our interest with having new things, some of use would decide to consider second hand items.

I have a colleague who has switched from phone to phone over the past few months and it was from trading in his mobile phone with those that have been sold to stores that he often goes to. They still work and look good but, some people would prefer band new items so as they are the 'first' ones to own it.

I have considered purchasing second hand items but, not yet on mobile phones.

How about you guys? Would you like to satisfy yourselves by having different phones through second hand purchases or simply keep a mind set that a brand new phone of your own is far better? Any advantages and disadvantages that you want to share? Elaborative opinions are most welcome (^_^ )

I do not consider anything wrong in buying a second hand mobile. Each and every day new mobile models with some extra new features are coming up in market and its not always possible for all to buy a new one everytime. As far as the condition of mobile handset is ok, there is no problem in buying a second hand set. Every one has his/ her own opinion on this.

myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3066)   ranked 1 out of 1,779 in cellular phones  5 months ago

I have to agree that as long as the second hand item is still functioning properly, there is nothing wrong in purchasing a second hand unit.

I have not purchased any second hand phone but, I have already purchased other items that are second hand and I am still using up to now like my PSP and my Wacom tablet that I got to purchase online. (^_^ )

Of course, if we want to purchase second hand items, we too would try our best to purchase the best that we could get and not simply purchase them so that we would have something new (-_- )

i think in todays world people thinking and ideology changes so quickly that they r growing more tecno day by day.
nokia launces a new set every month with new add on features .
so buying an old phone on cheap rates widens our chioce of changing phone at cheap rates.and we can switch to new technology easily when we want and at less rates.

myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3066)   ranked 1 out of 1,779 in cellular phones  5 months ago

Yes, with the constant updates of mobile phones, prices are getting lower and lower when it comes to models that have been set aside but still provide good use for mobile phone users.

I prefer a brand new phone than second hand phones for the fact that you are rest assured that you will have no problems about the phone and it is in good condition and not yet used. The battery, the charger and the unit itself are in good condition unlike second hand phones. You will never know whats the defect behind it since the seller will always find its way to sell them and do some market strategies. In the first place, why should the owner sell it? Some of the reasons maybe is they have to buy a new one. But some really sell it because they are some hidden defects.
I am satisfied having a brand new phone and use it for a long than switching from time to time with those second hand items.

myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3066)   ranked 1 out of 1,779 in cellular phones  5 months ago

That's also something that I always say to friends who would ask me when they seem to be uncertain of what to buy. If they can purchase a brand new item, why not purchase something new?

As you have mentioned, everything included in the item would all be new and you wouldn't have to worry about any hidden defect or the item might have already been modified with parts that aren't original so you wouldn't know if it would really last long or would only provide service after a few months.

Of course, not all sellers are income oriented. Most of them just happen to be lucky enough to have a new item and would like to sell their old ones instead of keeping them. Others just found that they could do better with a new model and selling their current phone would be additional so that they could purchase their new interest. Or as I have read in earlier times, they would be selling their items to have more money for something more important like their thesis studies...

Buyers would also have the privilege to scrutinize the item before purchasing it. thumbup

Yeah, if we could purchase a new one, go ahead. If we can't wait, then we have to be very keen keen on getting what we really want with minimum costs.

I prefer brand new if I can afford, but I don't mind buying second hand phone as well. I bought a second hand mobile phone before, it was Nokia 8210 and I never had an issue with it at least for a year or maybe longer (sorry can't really remember) and then I give it to my niece when I bought a new one. I think my niece got to used the mobile phone for a long time as well, before the phone gives up, lol. Actually I couldn't remember if the phone got broken or she lost it! I think the problem of buying second hand phone is warranty because some of them wont give you one and if you accidentally drop it or whatever happen in short period of time that was it, unlike new ones you get to bring it back and have it fix without worrying how much will it cost you. happy

myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3066)   ranked 1 out of 1,779 in cellular phones  5 months ago

Thanks for posting, CJay77.

Some people would sell their units because they already have a new one or perhaps they have no one to pass it on. Might as well earn money while getting rid of something that you don't longer need or use anymore, right?

Good point on mentioning warranty. That is indeed among the advantages of getting a brand new item. You are privileged to be secured that the newly bought item would still have services available even after sale. However, there are those warranties that seems unclear sometimes. For that, I mean that some warranties are indeed available but, when you per chance had to avail for them, it must be within a specific time to be availed as well as services aren't as speedy as it should.

If you ask me, If its colleague's phone and if you know that the phone has no reals problems then I will definitely go for second hand, As you know there is a new phone everyday. And even if you like a phone I am sure you don't want to keep it forever..so buy a second hand save money and exchange same for a new one or another cool second hand handset....

myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3066)   ranked 1 out of 1,779 in cellular phones  5 months ago

Indeed, these things are all luxuries that we can either have or not. We can settle with a modest model or get those that would also be considered by others as a fashion statement. My currect phone is already obsolete but, I still use it up to now because I can still use it. Aside from that, it was given by my brother who still works over seas. Its not that I don't want to have a new phone. I just value what my brother worked for. Of course, that's different with those other phones that we could purchase from those stores that would sell second hand units.

Good point there, vj0007. Perhaps my colleague also has the same perspective with the different mobile phones that he has used. thumbup

I don't really care if it's 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th hand phone. As long as it does what it supposed to do, I'm fine with it.

myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3066)   ranked 1 out of 1,779 in cellular phones  5 months ago

You are right, as long as it still does what is is supposed to do, we should be fine with it. That's being practical. We still get the same features perhaps that we'd get from brand new phones and we would only spend less as well.

Thanks for sharing, sk66rc happy

I prefer new cell phones as I know what I am getting, where as a used phone, might not work all that well, and not hae all the features that I would really wants. I never have bought a second hand phone. The thing of it is, with a secon hand phone, you really don't know how much it is worn, if everything works on it. It is better for me to buy a new phone as long as I can afford it. If I can't then I wait until I am able to afford it. Have a great day, and happy mylotting. happy

myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3066)   ranked 1 out of 1,779 in cellular phones  5 months ago

Patience is indeed a virtue, rosekiss.

If we can afford a brand new phone, why settle for something that you are not sure of when it comes to second hand units. There are things to hesitate about when it comes to phones that have already been used. They might say that it has been only used for a few months, weeks, days or so on but, we'd still wonder why was it sold. Perhaps defects could be a reason? Then again, there are also phones that are referred as 'recon' or reconstructed as some of the parts are replaced to make it all working in order. Some people don't consider recons since the parts that often get replaced are not authentic parts.

With all those to consider, its up to us buyers if we'd wait to have enough money to purchase a brand new phone that we want or venture with those phones that we are not sure if they would last long. Chance and luck with those kinds (^_^")

I would prefer to have a brand new phone and I think any one would prefer to have a new phone over a used phone. I have had my experiences with both and let me just say, having a new phone is better. Although, yes I must admit that the used phones are more cheaper then the new phones.

Let me tell you my experience of getting a new phone. It was my first and last time having a used phone. I had purchased a used phone from my friend and well, I completely trusted her and stuff with that phone. Which she had informed me that she rarely used it and that I would be fine with it. The reason she had given me the phone was because I wanted a phone just like she had and my friend she had purchased a new phone and she had sold me the old phone. For two hundred dollars cheaper. So that was a great deal there. But after purchasing the phone, I still had all her information in the phone all the things that she had purchased through the phone and I had quite a deal of removing the things from the phone and actually adding the things I wanted in the phone. The thing when you purchase a second hand phone there will be certain damages that are done to the phone. Some that you would see yourself and others that you wouldn't notice right away. So well one day my husband was going to get me a new phone and so he wouldn't to sell my phone that I had purchased from my friend to the store. They would not take it because of some damage that was done to the phone a long time ago, like water damage to the battery.

So I believe that purchasing a new phone is the best way to go. You will know that the phone you have will have everything new in it and that if there were any damages done to the phone then you know that you were the one that did it.

Although purchasing new phones are more expensive and I would just save money to the side for it or just go ahead and get a used phone and then just be prepared to buy another one later on down the line.

Thanks for sharing your experience, trisha27 thumbup

Good thing you were able to get your second hand phone from someone you know you could trust. That's something that we don't get to be sure of when it comes to second hand units so chances would always vary.

Here, even if a phone has already gone under numerous owners and perhaps has sustained a variety of damage, kiosks at malls could still put a price on it if you are really considering on selling it to them. They would just repair the damages and refurbish it to make it appealing again for those interested in buying second hand phones.

Being the first owner would definitely make you aware of the damages that your phone has tolerated as well as the price that you would be willing to accept in case you decide to sell it.

I would choose a brand new mobile phone rather than go for a second hand.I just would feel uncomfortable with the thought that it was being used by other person though everything works fine. Also the matter of warranty comes. If a brand new one is having problem it will be repaired or replaced. It is not possible with second hand mobiles and may be the repairing cost will be high.So it is always better to be secure.
If price is a consideration then also there are many options. One can choose from mobile phones of different make with different features. These all are of personal choices.Still I think second hand things work well with many people and are comfortable with it.

myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3066)   ranked 1 out of 1,779 in cellular phones  5 months ago

Newpal, thanks for your input.

I guess those who do really want a specific model for their mobile phone would have to either wait patiently to have enough money to buy a brand new model or, if their patience isn't that enduring, consider getting a second hand unit instead of settling with a different model that is brand new and around their capability in buying.

Even if we do get to purchase a brand new item, we should always consider the nature of the warranty. Some warranties are really good to hear at first but, when you do get to avail for them, you'd end up realizing that it often takes a lot of time for them to process everything. Of course, that's based on how I experienced it. Not all warranties are like that. (^_^")

In the long run, it would be a personal preference if one would buy a second hand or a brand new one.

Most definitely anybody would want to have a brand new phone. My boyfriend just recently brought me a used phone on craigslist, and the phone works great. Of coarse most used phones have scratches and minor damage, but hey it is alot better than paying for a brand new $600 phone.

myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3066)   ranked 1 out of 1,779 in cellular phones  5 months ago

Yeah, you are right. Given the choice, why would they prefer a second hand unit if they could really get a brand new one?

If we really are lucky, we could get to purchase a second hand unit that only had minor damages and would still provide the same satisfaction that we would get from brand new units. A matter of choice and contentment.

Thanks, Duvalgirlmagic thumbup

I personally don't like second hand purchases when it comes to gadgets because I'm pretty much scrutinize every feature of each gadget that I buy.

However, If I can't afford that gadget, I'm going to save for it just to get a brand new. It's always satisfying to buy a brand new gadget because you'll get the excitement of un-boxing the gadget, you'll get the thrill of removing the lcd plastic cover from the screen, and many other stuffs that you'd enjoy when you buy a new one.

myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3066)   ranked 1 out of 1,779 in cellular phones  5 months ago

incredibleDNA, that's also one of the things I look forward to when I purchase brand new items.

The excitement that we get when we are about to take it from its packaging and how everything looks and even smell brand new. rolleyes

We would even go over the manual, read it even if we already somehow know what the features would be due to our interest on buying that model early on. Checking pamphlets or online information with regards to that model. And we also christen it by personalizing our brand new item. Be it on themes, ring tones, images and so on..

Something that we don't get to appreciate when we purchase second hand units (-_- )

i think you should choose Chinese phone
they are come with great functionality and affordable price

myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3066)   ranked 1 out of 1,779 in cellular phones  5 months ago

techsaqib, thanks for your input.

Yeah, I have seen china-phones being available and they do have a lot of features that you'd expect from other models of other brands that would come at a high price. I guess the popularity of it being affordable is getting higher but, some would still have hesitation due to warranty issues that the distributor would offer. Known brands grant certainty while those that aren't as popular don't..

Durability aside, some phones do step up to the challenge and the features that you could avail are just impressive. The last one I saw, you can actually watch television. If china-phones would offer Wi-Fi capability, I guess I'd be buying one with a qwerty keypad. (^_^ )
