Keeping The Sabbath Day. |
| |
| In the book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 5 and verses 12 to 15 we read the commandment regarding the keeping of the Sabbath. It is very clear and the fact that it is explained so thoroughly shows that it was considered important. As is often the case however, man decides to makes changes and by the time of Jesus it had been changed so much that Jesus commented, "The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath". Why do you think that particular commandment was given in the first place, and what did Jesus mean by that statement? | | | | | |

| | God created man without such a sabbath until the time of Moses. The laws were made because the Israelite people does what seems right in their own eyes. I think that the sabbath day is commanded in the old testament for the Israelites to rest from all their labors and commemorate what God hath done. In the New Testament, when Jesus died, the veil of the temple was rent with many significance for the believers in the Lord. Jesus do away with ceremonial laws like animal offerings and feasts. As Jesus said, man is not made for the Sabbath. I believe that the sabbath is done away with, and we can assemble in any day just like the believers in the book of acts... | | | | | | |

| | Hi learn2earn, Thank you for your comment and I almost thought that I could hear my father again,as he explained about the veil of the temple be rent, and how Jesus's death signified a new covenant between man and God. He believed strongly however in keeping Sunday, although he refused to judge others who believed differently, he however would not be swayed. My thoughts are a little different from yours in that a day of rest is necessary for everyone even the animals that's why such importance is placed upon it as we see in verses 14 and 15, where they are reminded that they were servants in Egypt. Also, the law had been so corrupted by the time of Jesus, that it was more of a burden than a day of rest as it was meant to be and hence the reminder from Jesus. There is logic behind most things unless it has been tampered with by man. Thanks again, especially for bringing back that memory of my father. Blessings. | | | |

| | Well I feel that god created the world, he had chosen a day for rest that is the seventh day......and I feel the entire concept of sabbath come from here......even in those days there was something called as work and people used to labor day in and day out in fields, in their workplace, etc.......and they dint really have that much of time to spend in prayers, and hence maybe god decided to keep one day holy and spend it in prayers.......as the bible says prayer is a powerful tool......so sabbath is supposed to be holy...... But now we see that there are so many jobs which have a requirement for you to work i the night as well, doctors, hospitality, nurses, tourism, airlines, etc.....and you don't really get to keep sabbath holy, but I feel that even if we spend some quality time with god we have kept our sabbath holy...... well sorry to have my own interpretation about sabbath, as I don't really know too about about the biblical details on sabbath, but i just fell it this way..... Have a holy sabbath !!!! | | | | | | |

| | Hi John4Christ, If you notice, the commandment says nothing about prayer, it only talks about rest. We are to be aware of God everyday and life itself is prayer. At the time the commandments were given, overseers would have their servants, slaves and animals working 24/7 if they could get away with it.When one died there was always another to take their place, the commandment to keep the Sabbath was meant to stop all of that and give everyone a day of rest. By the time of Jesus, men had changed it so much that it had become a berdon instead of what it was meant to be. That's why Jesus said,"the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the sabbath". Blessings. | | | |

| | Hi aslanlight, Thanks for commenting. My thoughts are that it was meant as a day of rest for everyone including the animals. Without it some people would have worked their servants, slaves and animals to death in short order. By the time of Jesus it had been tampered with so much that it was more of a berdon that the day of rest it was meant to be. Blessings. | | | |

| | I read in the creation story that the 7th day was made the Sabbath. It is a sign between us and God that we believe Him to be the creator. It shows Him to be the owner of the world. The commandments were written in stone just like all the rest so if the fourth commandment was done away with so are all the other commands. The only two things brought out of the garden were the Sabbath and Marriage and you know what is being done to marriage. Our churches have picked up so much that is pagan that I think Paul would have a hard time trying to decide if our church was pagan or Christian. | | | | | | |

| | Hi lotterylover, Thanks for your input, I realize that the Genesis story says God rested on the Sabbath day but there seems to be no further mention of it until the commandments were given to Moses. I have a little different take on the reason for the Sabbath if you will read my other responses here. To be everything has a reason and a purpose and that's what I always look for. Blessings. | | | |

| | I don't know that the prophecy about us being forced to worship on a certain day will come about while I am alive but I know what ever day they force us to worship on is not the Sabbath God intended for us. I think that time will be a separating the goats from the sheep. Those who keep God's Sabbath will be spared the 7 last plagues. What kind of punishment man can do to us will be nothing compared to the 7 last plagues. I think the statement about the Sabbath being made for man and not man for the Sabbath means that we are do as God has asked us to do in keeping the Sabbath. It is not man to say what we are to do on the Sabbath. How many people who have decided what day they should keep really keep it according to the instructions given at Mt. Sinai as to how a Sabbath should be kept? I do know that Jesus intended that the disciples would be keeping the Sabbath even 40ty years after he was gone because he told them to pray that their flight be not on the Sabbath (the day he kept) or in the winter. | | | |

| | To my understanding, the Sabbath or Lord's Day is the day of rest following the creative labors of the Lord, which, for me, means that the age of man is the Sabbath. Whether working, resting, eating and such we are to keep it ALL holy. The day of rest for man is the seventh day after the start of the week.. So if my week of labor starts on wednesday then my day of rest is tuesday. | | | | | | |
