$1 A Day Challenge! |
If you only had $1 to eat with a day what would you eat? And nooo I'm not talking about getting the food in bulk and averaging it out to $1 a day -- I'm talking about if you were only supplied ONE crinkly old dollar a day to eat with for the ENTIRE day. What would you eat? I have a few things in mind but will hold off as not to give anyone any easy ideas; I will share my opinions as this thread goes along. Ok hope your stomach is growling because right now I'm giving you your first $1 for a whole day to eat so use it wisely

1. irene66 (270) | 4 months ago | I go for a noodle. this is the cheapest food I can buy in my country. I can eat this 3 times a day. Besides noodle is a carbohydrate food and rich in protein too. Now I'm eating apples and a glass of milk!! LOL

2. dorannmwin (1930) | 4 months ago | Well, for breakfast it would have to be eggs (is there somewhere that you can get eggs from individually?). For lunch I would get a pack of Ramen Noodles (15 cents a package here right now). Dinner is soup beans soaked and then boiled until tender. Don't have enough money for the ham to flavor them though. It would be sustenance.

multimastery (456) | 4 months ago | No I don't know if eggs are sold individually. At least I've never seen them here in the US.
| |
| rylda_sameed (25) | 4 months ago | Yes! but here in the philippines you can buy here individually anywhere also because every body here has their own chicken
| |
Downwindz (289) | 4 months ago | I believe if you go private you can easily get eggs individually, though it isnt exactly the cheapest food around but it is good in proteins...
| |
multimastery (456) | 4 months ago | Sure wish I could by individual eggs here too, would make challenge for me much easier.

3. LittleMel (6484) | 4 months ago | don't think I can get much with a dollar a day maybe a small package of rice that lasts a week one can of meat or 2 packs of noodles just one of each every day I guess add tax on top, that's pretty much what I can get for chips I have to save:)
| |
| |
multimastery (456) | 4 months ago | Seems like that can of meat would be about a $1 alone unless you know where to get it real cheap.
| |
LittleMel (6484) | 4 months ago | yeah it's $ 1 with tax.

5. vingyan06 (1250) | 4 months ago | Hello Multimastert, this is an interesting discussion! Okay, I have think of what to eat with only $1 in my hand. $1 equal to RM3.50 in my country currency, which is Ringgit. First of all I will use $0.60 to buy a loaf of white bread, it is my favorite food too. So my breakfast and lunch is based on this loaf of bread, should be keeping my tummy full as they are many pieces of bread in a loaf of bread. For dinner, I would go to the super market to have some free taste food and beverage. The super market near my place always has free taste on certain new arrival food or some food on promotion so they will have free taste for customers. After that, I will use my balance of money, to buy a pack of instant noodles. Happy Mylotting!

multimastery (456) | 4 months ago | You just made me think about something needed here at MyLot. I just realized that there is no way to edit discussions here. That would be a useful feature to have; it's in every other forum I'm a member of.
But yeah we'll keep it no help, that would get too easy for some people for this challenge. But you're still allowed to get Free Smells out the supermarket tho. I read somewhere that if you smell food and imagine eating it could possible make you full. Mind over matter hmmm

6. subha12 (16449) | 4 months ago | with 1$ we can survive in this part of world a day. I will buy say 250 gms of rice. It will be enough for me for a day. two eggs, a carrot, few beans, 100 gms onion, a half pound bread. Then will take bread with one egg for breakfast,. will make veg fried rice with rice, vegetables and the remaining egg. it will suffice for lunch and dinner. In evening i will still have some money to buy a small cake or few biscuits.

subha12 (16449) | 4 months ago | First of all, our currency is not Dollar. then 1 Rs= 0.02 $. Can you think anywhere in world anything eatable can be obtained in 2 cents?
| |
vingyan06 (1250) | 4 months ago | Hello Subha, I agree with you, there is no way we can get a food with 2 cents. In fact, this is an interesting discussion. Multimastery, maybe you should stated clearly before you post the discussion. Evry one here think of $1 callenge is in US dollar.
| |
multimastery (456) | 4 months ago | Ok you got me, my bad, we'll just keep with $1 US to keep it simple. Trying to get into all the different World currencies is confusing.

7. cutepenguin (3707) | 4 months ago | In my city, I would be very hungry. $1 won't buy much at all. I guess I could get a couple of bananas.
I could probably find free food though - there are often free lunches put on by various clubs at school, if you do volunteer work snacks are often provided, that sort of thing. But in general, even if you got the food in bulk and averaged it out to $1 per day, you would be eating less than a meal per day in this city.
| |
| |
multimastery (456) | 4 months ago | Yeah it would be rough. And even rougher because in this Challenge we all have to be totally independent with our dollar without any outside help.

multimastery (456) | 4 months ago | That souunds like a winner jayrene! Can you do that where you live with it being $1US. We have decided to stick with $1US to keep discussion simple across the board.
| |
jayrene (1885) | 4 months ago | did you not see what i wrote above? i thought i made it clear i even had the ratio of $1 (one US dollar) to our money here which is Philippine peso.
we use US dollars here to spend, we change them to our currency first, if you get what i mean before we can buy anything here.
my post was really simple if you had seen the exchange ratio...
| |
jayrene (1885) | 4 months ago | we DONT use US dollars here...
sorry forgot to put the DONT.

mariposaman (2507) | 4 months ago | I cannot buy just one egg here, and a can of sardines cost more than a dollar. Rice and pasta are cheap and I could probably get them at the bulk food store.
While one might eat for a dollar for a limited time, nutritionally you would soon run into health problems due to a nutritionally poor diet withoug some fresh vegetables, or even vegetables of any kind, as you concentrate on poor foods like rice and pasta.
| |
jayrene (1885) | 4 months ago | you can have variety of foods here everyday for that US$1. if ever, the next day, i wont be eating the same thing again, except for the rice, as we are rice eating people. we can have vegetables as viand the next meal, which is also cheap here. what i wont be able to eat with that small amount is chicken, pork and beef meats.

| 9. Daraiki (49) | 4 months ago | So one dollar here would be 5 kunas. Simple i would go and buy 4 small ''bread pieces'' (really don't know how to translate that) i would rashen it through the course of the day...one every 6-8 hours and i would drink plenty of water...we have public taps around the city near sport fields. It would be a hard existance but i think you would survive
| |
| |
multimastery (456) | 4 months ago | Do you think you could survive for 7 days like that? I might but I'd be super weak that's for sure! Sad thing is that some people really have to live like this.
| |
| Daraiki (49) | 4 months ago | Yea it is said. But i'm afraid that's how this world is one will starve so another can eat.

10. mariposaman (2507) | 4 months ago | the only way I know how to each cheapest to buy in bulk. Having to buy food a dollar a time is very uneconomical. Something like spaghetti that you can buy for a dollar a package or cheap spaghetti sauce for a dollar jar to keep meeting all day for a couple of days unfortunately by your rules I would have to save up for two days.
Nope, cannot do that.

mariposaman (2507) | 4 months ago | Right now the Canadian dollar is close to the American dollar. I think 1$ American is presently about $1.08 Canadian, so I have a few cents more!
A dollar might buy some rice and beans at the bulk food store, and maybe a bullion cube for flavour. A couple of tea bags and powdered milk for drinking. After a few days of this kind of diet I would be craving a nice salad.
| |
mariposaman (2507) | 4 months ago | I think the only way you could sustain yourself on a dollar a day is to forage for wild foods. You would have to harvest berries, mushrooms, and nuts you could find. Also you could snare some pigeons and if you had some equipment maybe the odd fish. Greens during the summer could include dandelion greens, shepherds purse, etc.. Foraging for acorns and leeching them could feed you for days.
