Do you think there should be laws against using a cell phone while driving? |
|
I just moved to a state where you are only able to use a cell phone if you have a hands-free device. The state I just moved from does not have any laws regulating cell phone use while driving. It came to a shock to me when I found out I could no longer use my phone as usual while driving. I usually only use my phone while in an emergency, or if its really necessary (such as giving directions to someone following you that gets lost). I agree that people do not concentrate as well when they use their phones while driving, but I have heard there are studies stating that hands-free devices take your concentration away just as much.
Does anyone know more about these studies? What are your thoughts about cell phone use while driving?

1. k4karthik (374) | 5 months ago | I too agree that when driving one should not use cell phones. It not only gives troubles to the driver also the other drivers.
Even though they are using cell phones with hands free, their concentration will be on talking to other person and not on driving. What is the need of talking while driving. In the emergencies stop the vehicle finish talking and then start. This is what i do.
I think cell phone using while driving should be banned even if they are using hands free.

However, most of the time, law enforcement doesn't bother until junior's already gotten splattered all over the highway by the twit too busy texting and talking.

This is for the drivers own good because when he is driving he has to pay all his attention on driving any disturbance can cause n accident. When a driver is talking on the phone his thinking time decreases as he is not totally focused on driving. SO when another truck or a car is coming up ahead, his breaking time might decrease and an accident can occur.

4. dianmelydia (1755) | 5 months ago | I think this is not only about a law. Especially driving law or traffic law. But this is all about safety. Our life could be in risk of traffic accident, even die, if we drive and using a cell phone at a same time. And this is not a folks. There's alot of fact proved this matter. Almost everyday we can find such bad news happened worldwide. But i still don't understand why there's still alot of people won't stop using cell phone while driving. In my city, i can easily find a motorcycle driver driving and using cell phone on the main road. And i also don't understand why my area's police never admonishing such people. This is a very high risk. Don't let a simple conversation harm our own life. I think the main reason is modern people are so dependant with they cell phone. That's why they used to think if answering a phone call is very important for their business and their life. But unfortunately that is a wrong mindset. Sometimes i find a good motorcycle driver who stop their motorcycle to the road side for answering a phone call. But on car drivers, they won't stop their car when they answering a phone call because they feel so comfort inside their car and they think they won't be risk their own life since they are inside a car, perhaps they think they will protected by the car's body. But they didn't realized if they can risk other people's life if they negligent on driving because of talking on their cell phone. So, using cell phone while driving is not only will risk ourselves, but also the affect can risk other people. Better we think to make the safety driving as priority. Remember that we only have one chance for life. Good luck and have a nice day. Happy mylotting.

| JenBth (45) | 5 months ago | I agree, and like I said I had not even really considered it since my former state didn't even have this law. I had really only heard of accidents with people texting- not using their phones. I never felt that it was a big deal because everyone did it- it was natural. It wasn't something anyone thought twice about. I only did it when I felt that I needed to. Now that it has been called to my attention, I am very conscious of it. I do think that texting while driving is crazy... when you are looking away from the road while moving, how do you not get in an accident?

5. metschica25 (4788) | 5 months ago | Hey! I feel I am gonna answer just like mostly everyone else on this topic. Yes, I think there should be a law that don't let you use a cell phone while driving . Sometimes, you pay more attention to who you are talking to on the phone . I have been driving with a friend that wrote out a shopping list while on the phone with her boyfriend . You miss simple things when on the phone and could cause an accident or something and I know most times you can slow traffic down too. A blue tooth is ok but I dont think you should gab just to gab while driving, ya know.

| JenBth (45) | 5 months ago | Texting is awful- even at red lights. This is inexcusable... bluetooth or other hands free devices, or just waiting to stop completely is so much more reasonable. Unfortunately there is not really a way to catch people doing this since it is out of view from other cars and you don't find out till it is too late.

7. gossipzz (365) | 5 months ago | Where I live. It is against the law to drive and use a cell phone. This is a very dangerous situation. Alot of people have gotten in an accident driving and talking on the phone. One girl caused someone their life argueing with her boyfriend while driving and on her cell phone. I also think hand held devices are the same because your focus is not on the road. If you want to give direction have someone else in the car give directions. Let us all reach safe. Happy lotting.

| JenBth (45) | 5 months ago | I agree, but I also think that people like me who have not ever lived anywhere where talking on your cell phone while driving is illegal should not be judged negatively. If it has never been illegal, acceptable in all of your surrounding communities and little to no accidents have occurred in your area from it, then it does not seem right to point fingers at someone using their phone in these areas. I never felt in danger driving around people on their cell phones and I used it for important things. As I said, I only use hands-free now that I moved to an area where this is the norm and legal.
For example, if you had someone following in the car behind you, but got caught at a light in a bad neighborhood- Do you let them wander around in a bad neighborhood where something might happen to them, or do you make a quick phone call in safe conditions and let them know to turn left at the 2nd intersection ahead (if no one else is in the car with you)? In each situation the positives and negatives need to be weighed. I think using your cell phone in a state that allows cell use in a situation such as this is perfectly acceptable.

8. trisha27 (499) | 5 months ago | I also live in a state that you must use a handsfree phone device if you're going to be talking on the phone. Although I do believe that talking on the phone period will distract you from your driving hands free or not. Although when doing hands free, it gives u the opportunity to talk on the phone as well drive with both hands. There is a law also in my own city that when you are driving in a school zone where there are schools and students. That you can't even text, but you can talk on the phone you just have to have hands free. During my time driving in this city and even travelling I have become surprised with people who have gone through great lengths in texting while they are driving and I wonder how that happened and how they would text and be driving. I think its crazy. Also, I have seen other weird things people do while driving and I wonder what people are thinking. I believe also that people who do text and drive or talk on a non hands free phone while driving are the causes of most accidents. You know here in my city the news here did an excerpt on bus drivers here who have text as well as talked on the phone while doing their routes and they're not supposed to be doing that. But yet they still do it. And they were mentioning in the news because of them talking on the phone during their routes were the cause of their accidents. They had like a video tape and they went through the recordings to see what happened with the accident and yep it showed the majority of them talking on the phone and texting. Yep and they sure did get fired for that and that is understandable they should be focusing on their job, and not talking on their phone.

| JenBth (45) | 5 months ago | I absolutely agree- I can't believe bus drivers would text or talk on the phone. They are usually driving a huge vehicle in urban areas where people often walk out in front of traffic. It is weird what you see people doing in the car... leaning into the backseat while driving, or to the side seat. I have seen people's heads go out of view because they are leaning down to get something. I think this type of driver is much scarier than someone talking on a hands-free device or even a regular cell phone. I'm not condoning it, but at least your head is actually up and looking at the road.

9. Quiplet (164) | 5 months ago | Jen, you do not mention which state you moved from/to but probably the more congested traffic the state, the more restriction on cell phone use while driving.
I look at it this way: Hands-free or not, the person on the other end of your cell phone conversation cannot see the traffic conditions, whereas a passenger in your car beside you could see and react to the conditions. This reaction, vocal or not, could prevent you the driver from a serious error. (call it back-seat driver, sometimes it helps). The other person on the cell phone is more apt to distract your attention.

10. taztheone (1209) | 5 months ago | I don't think that such rules should be there even though in my country the same rule applies. You cant talk on the mobile while driving. Many people think that they won't be able to concentrate on driving if they are talking on the phone. Even though I'm against it, the rules are rules!!
