Who was the first METAL band....Led Zepplin or Black Sabbath?  

Well...let's just say rock...even though I think he's the best at both.

Well, he is good but you also have Jimi Hendrix and George Thorogood and several others. You really think he is the best?

I admit I WAS young and impressionable when I first saw him play...but being the inovator that he is...especially when he used the bow on his guitar...I'd say, yes he is the best. I love guitar...and you're right, Hendrix and Thourogood are wonderful and easy to listen to...but I'd vote Page as best anytime. Next in line would be Stevie Ray Vaughn.

I would agree on Stevie Ray Vaughn. And I think Jimi Hendrix would hold a fast second to that but, this other fellow I am just not sure of him. LOL

I am a die hard Zepplin fan.

As an interesting side note...a local radio station asked the same question...ZEP won!

Led and AC/DC are two of my all time favorites.

I have a celtic knot tattoo taken from the cross when you enter the village my great grandmother was born in...my brother got a rubbing and I used it as a tattoo between my shoulders right under my neck. It is for strength and loyalty.

Way cool. I thought if I got a tatoo I would have a celtic knotting done very delicately around my wrist as a bracelet. In a pretty green color. With maybe some yellow in it as well.

I work in a very conservative part of the country. If I got a tat where it could be seen in my scrubs, they'd make me bandage it...lol. I wanted to get one of those pretty little nose piercings, wear a little tiny jewel on the side of my nostril...boss said, NO WAY. And since she was my best friend as well, I listened to her. lol

I like the bracelets too...considered one on my ankle..daughter in law got one...said it hurt real bad. let me know if you get the bracelet and if it hurt...bones being so close to the surface and all.

Oh, I would probably never get one. I think they are lovely and have seen the docs about the ascient Japanese art of keeping the tattooed body after the person dies. Oh my gosh! Can you imagine! They actually skin the person for their tats. And another one about the tribes that scar their children with this ornate tatoo looking scars that are a right of passage sort of thing. And, of course, I love to watch LAInk. What artists they are. I admire them very much but just can't see doing to myself. My daughter has a nose peircing. I like it on her but doubt I would never get one myself. I like the one the son on Dog, the Bounty hunter has too. But, again, I wouldn't get one myself.

I admit I was not liking it when my oldest son turned 16 and came and asked for permission to get one. I looked at what he wanted, listened to his reasons and decided to ok it. Why? I firmly believe that a person's body is their own and if they know what the consequences are they should be able to do what they want with it. (within reason)

I do understand where you are coming from, though. It is a massive statement and a permanate one.

I didn't think Hendrix was around before 1969. Sabbath and Zep were already recording before then, weren't they?

His first album was released in 1967, after he'd built a huge reputation for several years on stage.

I have to admit....I've not been a big Hendrix fan, though he had great talent it just wasn't my thing. I thought his debut was at Woodstock. OH MY! I've used up my one wrong answer for the week!

I watched a documentary on History Channel on Woodstock....made me feel real old. Something I REMEMBER...on the History Channel?

Want to feel really old? I was on a crew that worked setting up Woodstock! We never really expected anyone to show up there, but it was a job a friend told us was fast cash, so my husband and I went there.

Zep and Sabbath were around in the sixties (that's almost 50 years!)...reploid. Though I do appreciate Def Leppard.

I like bands like dire straits and pink floyd which I consider quite old. Started to like led zepplin quite lately. Wow. I did not knew zepplin was 50 years old. Black sabbath is not one of my favourites. Happy Mylotting.

I can understand you would say Page, because he was in Zeppelin, but, I honestly think Jimi Hendrix is a far, far better Guitarist all round, as is Ritchie Blackmore. Think about it, Hendrix has been dead for what, 38 years,and people still talk about like he is the greatest which he is. And to be perfectly honest, I dont think id put Page in my personal Top 10 favourite Guitarists.

I suppose. I think its jsut I have a strong opinion about what I like. I know what music I like, and what I dont, but I will admit, I do respect all the guys from Zeppelin...

Music is very personal. The root word of music is MUSE....to think. I guess that's why Zeppelin is my favorite....their songs make me think.

Oh and, you cant say Led Zeppelin is the first Metal band, because Jimmy Page is a great guitarist....He has never classed himself as Metal anyway

I was going by several radio stations that have, in the past, had promos asking that very question. It's all a matter of the perspective of the listener, don't you think?

Which is why I prefer Zep.

We were discussing FIRSTS, and the two bands you mentioned came around a long time after both Zep and Sabbath. I still believe that Zep and Sabbath were the forerunners of the Metal genre.

I admit, Sabbath had a more 'dark' persona. But there are metal bands around now that do not have that 'dark' persona, like Metallica? Perhaps.
