Who was the first METAL band....Led Zepplin or Black Sabbath? |
I wanted to do something fun for a change...I had this discussion with my sons when we studied the History of Rock and Roll.
Who was the first Heavy Metal band?
They say...Black Sabbath as they are all die hard Ozzy fans. I say...Led Zepplin as Jimmy Page is the greatest guitarist in the world.
What do you say?

1. celticeagle (4743) | 4 months ago | Funny, I was just listening to this very album noted on the pic here. Anyway, all I can find is that they both started about the same time. That would be 1969 so it would just be a matter of months that makes or breaks them. Jimmy Page is a grand guitarist but I would say he is the worldest greatest. Now is this rock guitarist or blues guitarists? Dead or alive? Let me know and then I could give you my opinion. LOL

debrakcarey (1351) | 4 months ago | Well...let's just say rock...even though I think he's the best at both.
| |
celticeagle (4743) | 4 months ago | Well, he is good but you also have Jimi Hendrix and George Thorogood and several others. You really think he is the best?
| |
debrakcarey (1351) | 4 months ago | I admit I WAS young and impressionable when I first saw him play...but being the inovator that he is...especially when he used the bow on his guitar...I'd say, yes he is the best. I love guitar...and you're right, Hendrix and Thourogood are wonderful and easy to listen to...but I'd vote Page as best anytime. Next in line would be Stevie Ray Vaughn.
| |
celticeagle (4743) | 4 months ago | I would agree on Stevie Ray Vaughn. And I think Jimi Hendrix would hold a fast second to that but, this other fellow I am just not sure of him. LOL

celticeagle (4743) | 4 months ago | Led and AC/DC are two of my all time favorites.
| |
debrakcarey (1351) | 3 months ago | btw...love your avatar. I use a cladaugh over on Yuwie. I'm into all things celtic. That is really pretty.
| |
celticeagle (4743) | 3 months ago | Thank you. I am into all things Irish and the celtic knots are so nice. And then I am also into all things Peace or hippyish. So there ya have it.
| |
debrakcarey (1351) | 3 months ago | I have a celtic knot tattoo taken from the cross when you enter the village my great grandmother was born in...my brother got a rubbing and I used it as a tattoo between my shoulders right under my neck. It is for strength and loyalty.
| |
celticeagle (4743) | 3 months ago | Way cool. I thought if I got a tatoo I would have a celtic knotting done very delicately around my wrist as a bracelet. In a pretty green color. With maybe some yellow in it as well.
| |
debrakcarey (1351) | 3 months ago | I work in a very conservative part of the country. If I got a tat where it could be seen in my scrubs, they'd make me bandage it...lol. I wanted to get one of those pretty little nose piercings, wear a little tiny jewel on the side of my nostril...boss said, NO WAY. And since she was my best friend as well, I listened to her. lol
I like the bracelets too...considered one on my ankle..daughter in law got one...said it hurt real bad. let me know if you get the bracelet and if it hurt...bones being so close to the surface and all.

celticeagle (4743) | 3 months ago | Oh, I would probably never get one. I think they are lovely and have seen the docs about the ascient Japanese art of keeping the tattooed body after the person dies. Oh my gosh! Can you imagine! They actually skin the person for their tats. And another one about the tribes that scar their children with this ornate tatoo looking scars that are a right of passage sort of thing. And, of course, I love to watch LAInk. What artists they are. I admire them very much but just can't see doing to myself. My daughter has a nose peircing. I like it on her but doubt I would never get one myself. I like the one the son on Dog, the Bounty hunter has too. But, again, I wouldn't get one myself.

2. cobrateacher (4223) | 4 months ago | Hi, DebraK! What a change! If I were to judge, Jimi Hendrix was first. Sabbath was next, but at just about the same time as Zeppelin.
| |
| |
debrakcarey (1351) | 4 months ago | I didn't think Hendrix was around before 1969. Sabbath and Zep were already recording before then, weren't they?
| |
cobrateacher (4223) | 4 months ago | His first album was released in 1967, after he'd built a huge reputation for several years on stage.

cobrateacher (4223) | 4 months ago | Want to feel really old? I was on a crew that worked setting up Woodstock! We never really expected anyone to show up there, but it was a job a friend told us was fast cash, so my husband and I went there.

4. mikedotcom (197) | 4 months ago | I am a HUGE fan of Led Zeppelin, and I appreciate you as another...but... please learn to spell their name correctly! (you left out an 'e'). Now who was 'first'? Black Sabbath was called Earth in 68, and Led Zeppelin was The New Yardbirds but it wasn't until 69 that Earth change the name to Sabbath, and Zeppelin already had 2 albums out by then. I would say Led Zeppelin was first in that case. Deep Purple was also out and about during those same days and I would call them heavy metal too! Eric Clapton formed the supergroup Cream in late 66 which precedes all of the above...but was Cream considered heavy metal? I guess all in all it just is not fair to give credit to any single band as the "first" heavy metal band as there was so much going on at the same time over in the UK...but I think it would be fair to give credit to England for introducing heavy metal to the world! p.s. I too think Jimmy Page is the greatest guitarist ever...because of the depthness of his playing, his composing skills, his creation of fabulous solos, his ability to create and write music of such varied styles and his awesome stage presence (I saw them in '77).

5. reploid (279) | 4 months ago | I think you should check out this blog: http://medmetal.blogspot.com .It talks about Def leppard which I think can be the first heavy metal band. They say the band is 30 years old. I think you should check it by yourself.
| |
| |
debrakcarey (1351) | 4 months ago | Zep and Sabbath were around in the sixties (that's almost 50 years!)...reploid. Though I do appreciate Def Leppard.
| |
reploid (279) | 4 months ago | I like bands like dire straits and pink floyd which I consider quite old. Started to like led zepplin quite lately. Wow. I did not knew zepplin was 50 years old. Black sabbath is not one of my favourites. Happy Mylotting.

6. firstcontact1990 (980) | 4 months ago | In their own way, they both are. If its in terms of Hard Hitting Riffs, then its Sabbath. But anyway, I really think, Sabbath are Pioneers of Heay Metal, and for the record, I dont consider Page the Best Guitarist in the World......Thats Jimmy Hendrix or Ritchie Blackmore....
| |
| |
firstcontact1990 (980) | 3 months ago | I can understand you would say Page, because he was in Zeppelin, but, I honestly think Jimi Hendrix is a far, far better Guitarist all round, as is Ritchie Blackmore. Think about it, Hendrix has been dead for what, 38 years, and people still talk about like he is the greatest which he is. And to be perfectly honest, I dont think id put Page in my personal Top 10 favourite Guitarists.
But as you say, "To Each their own"
| |
firstcontact1990 (980) | 3 months ago | I suppose. I think its jsut I have a strong opinion about what I like. I know what music I like, and what I dont, but I will admit, I do respect all the guys from Zeppelin...
| |
debrakcarey (1351) | 3 months ago | Music is very personal. The root word of music is MUSE....to think. I guess that's why Zeppelin is my favorite....their songs make me think.
| |
firstcontact1990 (980) | 4 days ago | Oh and, you cant say Led Zeppelin is the first Metal band, because Jimmy Page is a great guitarist....He has never classed himself as Metal anyway
