Has Your Doctor Recommended Back Surgery But You're Afraid To Have It Done? email this discussion to a friend?

My husband has a herniated disc of the lower lumbar area.He has the L5 disc pressing on the S1 nerve. He was in mild to moderate pain everyday and night and decided to go to the doctors. He had an MRI done and confirmed that was indeed the case. The doctor gave him some options of ethier letting the pain be his guide or having it surgically corrected. He opted to do what he calls spine decompression strecthes and abdominal isometric holds. So far it appears to be working for him and his pain has subsided considerably to the point that I have not heard complain nearly as much. However, his herniation is a mild one and knock on wood I hope stays that way!

It sounds like your husband is taking the sensible route. It isn't so much being afraid of the surgery as it is the fact that there is a lot of pain accompanying the surgery plus physical therapy. If the exercises are helping, then the surgery isn't to necessary right now. If the exercises weren't then it indicates that the surgery would be necessary. I also would check with a second doctor before I opted for surgery and I would research the procedure online before it is done so I know what to expect and how long it would take to recover.

I did that with my knee replacement surgery...the second opinion, researching the procedure online and talking to others that have had the surgery. It really helped me make up my mind.

Hi Loverbear

We did research the procedure online and also spoke with the DR. And he said to let your pain be your guide as long as its not hindering from doing your everyday task or functions then keep up with the excersises so thats what he decided to do as far as the recovery time its in and out surgery he could go for a 3 mile walk a few hours after the surgery if he wanted to in fact they encourage it, He just couldn't lift anything of course or ride in a car for a few weeks and no sitting for the first week.he could either stand up or lay down thats it
