Ladies need your help re Calcium supplements !!! |
| |
| Friends, its advisable to take calcium supplements as you get older to ward of osteopororsis. The only type of calcium supplemnt I can get here is Shellcall, which I am told is dangerous as it gives kidney stones. Please tell me what type of calcium supplements you take, are they herbal or over the counter types? I'm really interested to get some herbal ones, but perhaps it's not possible...anyway I'm sure my lady friends on mylot will have lots of valuable info to share. I'm abit worried as I have a mild arthritis and really do need to take something to compensate for this. | | | | | |

| | Hi sritrinity, I buy mine on line from a place you can google called healthspam, just because they are so ridiculously expensive here. They have added vitamin D and K which you need to help absorb the calcuium better if you don't spend a lot of time in direct sunlight. They taste like chalk and are pretty disgusting but necessary as I loathe milk. | | | | | | |

| | Hi typo there. I've been taking 2 a day since April on my docs orders due to lack of milk in my diet. They were relatively cheap on there and so far still able to deliver to Greece with our government protesting as they do with medicines. They are an authentic company for vitamins, it's not all droppings from the cutting room floor like some online places. | | | |

| | You should have about 1200 mg a day of calcium. Most multi-vitamins have calcium in them. Dairy products are good sources as is about 15 minutes of sunlight a day which has the vitamin D which we need. There are numerous articles on calcium supplements on the medical web sites like WebMD . They give good explanations of what to look for and who should and should not take them. Also always check with your doctor about it since some people should not take them. | | | | | | |

| | Hi Sri! Pl. don't worry about kideny stones, if your Doctor has prescribed you Shellcal, you may continue to take it, as it is good artificial source of vitamin. I believe that milk and milk products such as cottage chess or curd are the best source of calcium and we you continue to take milk and milk prducts, I think, you will be able to reduce the deficiency of calcium. All the best to you! | | | | | | |

| | hi s ritrinity I have pretty severe arthritis aand I used to take'Caltriate plus but I find that Tums super strength gives me all the calcium I need for each day 1200 grams'and that is enough.also be sure that you get enought vitamin d each day as D helps you to use your calcium better. There are also drugstore brands of calcium supplements'that also have vitamin D with them and are cheaper. just be sure to get at'least 1200 of calcium whatever brand you use.the brand wont give you kidney stones unless you take more than 1200 units,it is how much calicum you take that could cause kidney stones. take more than the recommended daily amount and yes any calcium supplement would give 'you kidney stones.do not use more than what is suggested. | | | | | | |

| | Hi sritrinity! I take a multi-vitamin supplement. And I also need some extra calcium too! But, I won't take anything without first speaking with my doctor and getting his advise as to what he feels is the best and safest thing for me to take! I have arthritis and some bone problems already! There are a few things out on the market, but I don't want to take anything until I check with my doctor. If you aren't sure what to take I suggest that you also contact your doctor just to check and see what kind would be best for you! | | | | | | |

| | Calcium citrate is the best form to take calcium in, and as others have stated, vitamin D is needed to help absorb the calcium. Also, don't take calcium at the same time as an iron pill. One interferes with the absorption of the other; I can't remember which one right now. For arthritis you may also consider glucosamine/chondroitin. I have arthritis in my knee and this has helped slow down the degeneration. Oh, and make sure you exercise. Mild to moderate exercise really goes a long way towards strengthening bones and keeping arthritic joints flexible. | | | | | | |
