Why do Filipinos start celebrating Christmas in September? email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 94/100. fatherblogger (475)   ranked 5 out of 4,227 in philippines3 months ago

Yesterday is the first day of September, and Filipinos are known to start celebrating Christmas when the Ber months start.

I already saw a TV show doing this, and I know others will follow. Christmas parols are now starting to sell, and we may now start to hear Christmas carols.

It is also known that season here in the Philippines will start to get colder.

So, why do you think Filipinos start celebrating Christmas in September?

Thanks! happy

I also don't get it but I have heard a lot of people saying that they can already feel the Christmas spirit once the month ends in "-ber" starts. Septemer, October, November, and December are Christmas time for most Filipinos. I think one of the reasons for this is that once the month of "-ber" starts, stores are starting to display and sell Christmas decorations and Christmas songs are started to being played almost everywhere hence that's why people are feeling the Christmas spirit in September. Filipinos are fond of celebrating different occasions, evident on how we celebrate fiestas, birthdays, and anniversaries. It's no surprise why Christmas is being celebrated early here in the Philippines which actually adds more fun and happy environment. It just doesn't start at September, it also ends late and extends as far as February. It has something to do with us Filipinos being so jolly and though I think that it's a little bit too much (celebrating it too early), it's also quite good since it makes almost everybody happy.

hello stone-boylol, i noticed that too when I started looking at the stores and when ever September comes in, every store is bombarded with Christmas lights and decorations. we always have to be ready before we can really celebrate the grand monthlollol

This is all connected to commercialism. Once the shopping malls and stores put on their Christmas decorations, the Holiday Season starts. Here in US it starts after Thanksgiving day at the last week of November, generally. The season ends after New Year. We do not even wait for the Feast of Three Kings. Based on what I have heard, the Philippines is the country who has the longest Christmas season in the world!
Is this true?

myLot reputation of 97/100. boybato (438)   ranked 256 out of 4,227 in philippines  3 months ago

I probably think so. Most of us Filipinos start to celebrate Christmas as soon as the months end in "-ber". September, October, November, and December are Christmas for Filipinos and it extends until February and for some, March. I even know some people who keeps their Christmas decorations in place until the start of the Holy Week which is in April. What I really find so ironic about a lot of Filipinos is that they keep on complaining how hard life is and how high prices are when in fact they are celebrating Christmas that long. I mean I know somebody who really cooks and lets his neighbors go to there house to eat and keeps on complaining that he always fall short on cash because the prices are high. lols

Maybe because Filipinos are known people with a jolly attitude who look Christmas as the happiest celebration on Earth and the most special. Personally, I always got excited when the month of September is coming and always look forward for a wonderful Christmas holiday.

Just an addition: Because Filipinos extremely love family gatherings, and Christmas is one season that makes the family unite and have a wonderful celebration together.Christmas holiday is an opportunity also to get together with long lost friends and can take a long vacation to the province. As a Catholic nation, Philippines had the most spectacular form of Christmas celebration as a tribute to the child Jesus. The "mesa de gallo" or the Early dawn mass, a nine-day novena leading to Christmas day, is the most memorable.

glareI never completed early dawn Christmas. but good thing that our parish decided to have another schedule evening mass for those who can't make it to the mornings. it's either dangerous or you see people still with their pillows and pajamaslollol

When i was in grade school... that was the time when the climate was still like normal... very little talk about global warming... when September comes... the weather becomes a little colder... so that means the end of the long hot summer sun... rains will come but not the very strong ones... so people start preparing for Christmas... since the cold weather is always associated with this holiday...

So now... even if it is still blazing hot in September... some people still consider this as the start of the Christmas season... so Christmas does start early in the Philippines...

Yes we have a long Christmas season here in the Philippines they are start counting the days when September comes. They start also to decorate their houses and offices. My mother also did that but now she told us that she pass it on to us I'm very lazy to decorate. Christmas now is only for children.

I know, but i am not complaining. I love the holiday season and when the calendar enters the -ber months, the spirit of joviality and celebration begins. I guess that is just the way Filipinos are, which reflect the value to put into this particular time of the year.:)

myLot reputation of 97/100. LetranKnight25 (4132)   ranked 108 out of 4,227 in philippines  3 months ago

glareI believe that it's simply due to the course of time that we started preparing for September for the Christmas season. some are even preparing or saving money for the exchange gifts or practicing their song for the Christmas Carol.. lol

we do? i dont think that it applies to every single Filipino. if it is about retailing then i can not blame them the earlier the better so that they can sell many of those parol or christmas decorations. but that does not mean we are celebrating, that means we are preparing. me and my wife starts buying our christmas gifts for everybody we know when the ber months starts. but we put out christmas decor usually on the first week of december

myLot reputation of 97/100. LetranKnight25 (4132)   ranked 108 out of 4,227 in philippines  3 months ago

lolI guess it was the retailers way to popularize the early Christmas season because they started decorating lanterns and lights in their respective stores. every one is preparing this September, i don't know about me and my family, were still budget short for thatsadsad

So Carried it on after he retired and we were in one place and have added a town too inside the house. you can see some of the pics of town in my profile.
and I try to keep this up since he has died.
and most time I add more to town or more to outside decorations

Of all the celebrations here in the Philippines Christmas is the favorite holidays here in our country. that is why as early as September many things that remind us of Christmas are being introduced already. That means we are starting to look forward for that day to come to us. So when the "Ber" months do come we start on our Christmas mode already. By the next two months it will become more prominent to see and hear things about Christmas again.

thumbupthis is one of the reasons why I love being a Filipino. where the season of joy and giving is started on this month. at the same time we also prepare ourselves to be cleansed. most people including the media will be talking about the Christmas seasonhappy

It is because September is the beginning of the BER months. Every year filipinos start our Christmas spirit at the 1st BER of the month and that is SEPTEMBER. And YES, September is the time that start to get cold, or should I say rainy season because we don't have winter here.

myLot reputation of 97/100. LetranKnight25 (4132)   ranked 108 out of 4,227 in philippines  3 months ago

glarethis is the either third of fourth time that I've heard about the "ber" month. i think am starting to believe this, i just really don't know the significance in our tradition. but i sure agree with it. i bet there's gonna be more rain and yet a lot colder than beforelollol

lolIf there's one reason i know that Filipinos start Christmas season on September, it's because most want to prepare for everything. like Gifts, decorations, foods and other stuff. by the time of October you will see a lot of people selling some Christmas Lights and lamps. for me, it's a way to be ready for the 25th of decemberlol
