I Love 'Ol Blighty | | I spend an awful lot of my life comparing England with where I live now in Massachusetts - I married an American and have been here 5 years, and naturally I have conversations a lot about my accent, differences, food, whether I'm Austrailian....which is fine, move to a different country, thats part of the fun. But sometimes I would really like to run around shouting YES, I DO LIKE ENGLAND BETTER! Because its true. Its my home, though I may never be able to live there again:( I love a lot of things and people in my American life. But I would like a break sometimes, to be able to talk about English things without having to qualify it with a 'but of course I like it here too', and without getting into one of those hideous political debates where we talk about politicians and ignore the whole of everything else that makes both countries what they are. Does anyone remember art? Music? Literature? Good food? So, gather, friends, and share with me - what do you love about England? What are your favorite foods, tv programs, places etc in England?Cheer me up and send me some positive thoughts about my home country, to remember when I need to here....!

Yes, it is morning over here in 'ol Blighty, just after 7am to be precise. Not the middle of the night as it must be over the in a place that is a bugger to spell.;) Could you not have moved to Utah or somewhere simpler?
I fear you are already on the slippery slope towards being a brainwashed American. You have spelt favourite without the u. I notice these things being a bit of a pedant. A pleasant pedant I must add.
What do I like about England? Wait 'til I put my brolly away and I will tell you.:)
The National Health service. A major debate is going on over in the US right now I know about introducing a similar type scheme and it has drawn a mixed reaction. I think it is a wonderful institution and although needs tighter control, provides access to primary care for all without the worry of cost.
Food. Well I still love tradional food like roast beef and yorkshire pudding, shepherds pie, stotties, cornish pasties, spotted dick, etc....... But I do like the new foreign muck and it is called cuisine now. I don't care as long as it tastes good.
Music. You want English then? Coldplay, ermmmmm I will have to come back to you on this one as I have Doris Day stuck in my head right now and she was most definitely an all-American gal.
TV Programs. Well it's a right load of shyte right now, mainly American imports;) Used to love Only Fools and Horses, Dads Army, One Foot in the Grave, Benny Hill:P
I am worried that I will lose all of what I have written so far so I am going to hit post response now and hope for the best:)

Hair_of_the_Dog (516) | 4 months ago | I am back before you have had a chance, so my follow up may even appear seamless.;)
More TV programs:
The Tudors is a great series which is following the fortunes and mishaps of Henry VIII and his wives. No.3 has just died and he is mourning with his latest mistress to give him solace.
QI with Stephen Fry is a good laugh and if you like documentaries, Coast has just finished on the BBC. It was a remarkable journey around Britain's coast with the very listenable Neil Oliver, not to mention my favourite Doctor - Dr Alice Roberts, with contributions from many other people.
back to bore you even more, later........

Hair_of_the_Dog (516) | 4 months ago | P.S. Did you add the Kipper the Dog tag?:P
| |
|
|
EnglishTeaDuck (733) | 4 months ago | Yes, I added Kipper, and indeed the fine photo of my own Kipper pup! He will be coming to England with me next week.
I'm avoiding health care conversations now, I got too angry. I will never understand why people cannot see it is wrong to have a health system where you can only be sick if you're rich.
Guess I'm not such a brainwashed American...lol

Hair_of_the_Dog (516) | 4 months ago | I saw your added pic but I never clicked on it before, otherwise all would have been revealed. I am more of a Watch with Mother fan, and with my kids - Postman Pat and Thomas the Tank Engine.
Glad to hear you want to keep your British heritage as close to your heart as possible. I think you have the best of both worlds at the moment.
Long may it continue:)

Hair_of_the_Dog (516) | 4 months ago | I am going to make yet another assumption here, if you will allow me.:)
Judging by your padded bra response, I am assuming you are rather voluptuous and prefer the lacy types with added support.
As for Jeremy Paxman. Yes, he is still at large on tv and I have found a link which will reveal all about his pants and how much they are valued.
I hope I can copy it across OK as it is a long one!:P

thea09 (4660) | 4 months ago | Hi again Hairy, well my comment to your first assumption is NO COMMENT, 5th amendment and all that and this is a public forum you understand. As you come to know me you will realise I have a rightly earned reputation as a complete techophobe so I'm sorry to say there is nothing at all I can do with the link you kindly posted as it is not clickable - and please don't offer to teach me, I already have backlogged pms threatening me with the ways of copy and paste and other such boring habits.

thea09 (4660) | 4 months ago | You know Hairy you're missing out on all the fun on the new interest on here, why not pop along to leaderboard disc and get yourself registered on there, think you might just find it a bit up your street.

|
|
Hair_of_the_Dog (516) | 4 months ago | I understand of course, thea. My assumption will just have to stand for now.;)
I am sure the links used to appear but now it just looks like a line of garbage text. You would have to copy and paste it into your browser window. It's not difficult, but if you are dead against improving your computer skills, I won't push you.
You are of course missing out on some interesting reading:)

Hair_of_the_Dog (516) | 4 months ago | Oh, it's me that's missing out is it?
A Leaderboard disc? Should I be interested?

| | 4. magickat (308) | 4 months ago | I love the English countryside, I think it is beautifulo, especially on a summers day. The woodlands in particular can be stunning - think of the carpets of bluebells in the spring, or the changing colour of leaves in the Autumn, which is just starting now.
I think English food is best in the winter, lovely stews and roast dinners, sausage and mash and anytime of year good old fish and chips (which I had today!).
English humour is great too, QI is one of my favourite shows and we are very good at satire - things like Have I Got News for You.
Don't get too homesick!

Hair_of_the_Dog (516) | 4 months ago | I wouldn't recommend 'Old' fish and chips.
You can't beat fresh fish! Well you can, but it would drop to bits.;)
