Since the beginning the facebook/myspace/xanga phenomina, I've been warning my kids about what they writeand say on the blog sites, since anyone can go in and read their comments, icons and tags. Well, now a Montana Policeman is probably wishing HIS mother had told him the same thing. The Bozeman City officer posted a message on his facebook wall that there should be a law allowing police to take people to jail for being "stupid". Officer Cody Anderson has now resigned after a Bozeman man filed a lawsuit against the city, Anderson and other officers stating he was wrongly arrested causing his civil and constitutional rights to be violated. The lawsuit also names Anderson's facebook entries indicate that he has a "lack of respect" for citizens' rights and seemed perfectly willing to abuse his position with the police department. So what do you think? Was Anderson just as stipid as h

there are a lot of people who thinks that since you can post anything you want on facebook, that you can really do it.. I don't think they know what the implications of posting things like that in the internet.. Posting a single comment can really ruin your life.. there are a lot of people who have been there, I don't know why don't people learn from other's mistakes.

Well, my answer to that question is that everyone believes that "It can never happen to me". It's that way about everything. My son was talking about getting caught throwin elbows on the bottom of a pileup in basketball, or throwing a punch in football. He said it was never the one that threw the first punch that got caught. It was always the second one. It's the same way with alot of things in life. The first one may get away with it, but after that...people are watching

That's really a good way of saying it.. I guess, people do believe that it could never happen to me.. I am also guilty of that kind of thinking.

I think he should have used a little more common sense when he posted what he did. You can always say something, using a little tact without using a person, place, date and time....his bad... Kind of like me, now...if I were to point out a certain officers name here in the little town that I live in and say his name, where he works and say that I think he needs to lose weight because he can't run and needs to quit frequenting the local donut shop, then I would get sued for slander or constantly be pulled over and either harassed or given tickets. Sometimes people should watch what they don't want to be seen by everyone else or change their privacy settings.

Not to mention if he ever wants to do police work again for a different city, most will know what he did and probably won't hire him. I know of a young woman who graduated college with my niece that cannot find a teaching job...even though that is her degree. She can't understand it, though the rest of us have a pretty good idea. It's because her facebook is full of photos, blogs and discussions about her partying and sleeping with everything that moves at night and on weekends. Most high schools don't want someone like that in their classrooms!

That's awful! Does she not realize how vulnerable these kids are at that age? WOW. I remember babysitting for one of my teachers while I was in high school. one night she called me to come sit with her kids. when I got there, she left with another man. Her husband was out of town! I had no clue what to do, or how to react.

sounds like this cop was pretty stupid. not to mention that you are right. absolutely everyone can read what you state in blogs, bulletins, etc. on those sites like that. and look at all the people thats gotten in trouble over it. they might as well just go out in the middle of main street and shout it out stupid to put anything on there your not ready to say to the world, right?

I think what people don't realize is that so many employers are looking at the social sites before hiring people now days. My niece is the manager of a day care center. She always searches for potential employees on these sites. What they write and the pictures they have posted say alot about the person and she has chosen not to hire some because of their lifestyles. She has to be so careful in dealing with other people's children

This doesn't strike me as a big deal at all. It's not like he sent a bill to the legislature actually proposing that idea. That is obviously just something he said in passing, probably talking about some frustrating people he'd dealt with on the job. I probably say something every hour that if I were any sort of public figure would get me in trouble. I bet that's true of a lot of people. I think comments like this can just be ignored.

Well, I would have to agree with you to a certain extent. I think it would depend on the job that you were in. He left himself open to be sued by everyone that he has put behind bars because he was running his mouth about his beliefs of who needed to be in jail. I think it would bad for the police department if they had let him stay on. Real Criminals could have gotten off on that technicality.

I am always with friendster. I knew about facebook/myspace/xanga phenomina back then but i was never part until later i joined facebook because of my family. I am even into blog either when it comes to social network sites. well, those words came from him proves it, he should learn to respect differences of individuals before he can start thinking of rules that are stupid .

I was sitting here re-reading my discussion before I responded to those who had offered responses to me. I got to thinking that if everyone who had ever acted stupid, or had a stupid moment in their life, or just did something that didn't make sense to anyone else around you...even yourself when you look back on it...Would every citizen in the world not end up in jail?
