Does anyone know where the term "vetting" comes from?

I've wracked my brains and can't figure out which word it's derived from--or is a made-up word from politics?

It does, thank you! I find it appropriate to use that term when talking about the snakes (sorry for the insult to the reptile world) that are appointed by our government.
