| 2. histexladi (46) | 4 months ago | My parents hit a happy medium. When I was a child spanking was a part of life- but my parents were very fair-also very strict about some things. My dad had huge hands but they were very good for a cuddle or,when I was smaller a tickle. And he would rather talk to you than spank you.And let me say,I would have rather have had the spanking! He was so logical and when you're a kid,you don't want to think about what you did wrong or why.You did it cause you wanted to-whatever it was. In my whole life,my Dad spanked me 3 times, and only then because I'd done something that was dangerous to my health....like going into a creek alone and at the time,I did not know how to swim.(I think I scared him very much) My mother was also fairly strict but she would send us to our room to think about whatever we did wrong.

| 3. cloudi (84) | 4 months ago | My father was definitely the stricter parent. My mom had a much calmer view of parenting then my dad. I think my dad believed that punishing would get us to behave better.

6. Ricki911 (1394) | 4 months ago | Both my parents swung both ways while growing up. It all depends on the situation on hand really. As I got older my parents allowed us to do as we want but with some guidance. They live by - you learn from your mistakes - so really if you dont experience it you wont learn from it. If you needed help they were there for you but you had to ask and would deal with your problems for you either. Ive seen my friends and roomates parents bail them out of their problems and in the end they dont learn anything from it. Ive seen them repeatedly continue doing these mistakes and problems.
I thank my parents for making me get a job when I was 16 and making m pay my bills when I was younger. Im now 21 paid myself thru college just bought myself a new car and now saving for a house. Also, can hold a job - I work 2 FT jobs while going to school and have been at one of those jobs for 6 years. Whereas my roomate is the complete opposite. She has worked a whole month of her life and then got fired. She has no money to call her own. She doesnt pay her bill - yet her father does. She doesnt drive because she doesnt feel like it - but expects everyone else to drive her around for free. This is a perfect example where she will finish school and have nothing but a university degree.
She constantly makes fun of me because Im in college and shes in university. According to her shes smarter and is going further in life. Wll I hate to burst her bubble. She may have a university degree but she has no work experience and no concept of the real world. I may have a lower paying job but Im smart with my money and understand that I have responsibilities to deal with before spending my money on other stuff.
All this is how your parents raise you and teach you in life. I really admire my parents for pushing this on us kids.

7. aixshaonline (291) | 4 months ago | Hi!
My dad used to work overseas so my mom had to have a firm hand on us. I had a curfew and I had to go with the carpool going home. She's also the "watchdog" when it comes to my weight! LOL. She constantly watches what I eat because I have the tendency to get really fat really fast, thanks to a trait I inherited from my father's side. But when my dad retired, quite a few things changed. My curfew was extended, given the condition that I had someone to go home with in case I came home late.
My parents have this issue about trust. Whenever I go out, I tell them the truth about where I'm going, who I'm with, etc. And if I had to go some place, I had to ask permission ahead of time so that they'll be prepared.:)

8. prinzcy (2166) | 4 months ago | It always my mom. My late father was never strict on us. I think he can't handled her daughter as he really care but don't know how to communicate with us. He will talk to my mom who will talk to us. My mom on the other hand really is strict. She haven't change. I still remember when I was young, she would stay by our side with a big cane to make sure we study. She gave us freedom but if we went beyond the line, we're dead. But I am thankful to her for that. Because of that, I've become the person I am now.
