Does anyone remember the "old" computers and programs? | | As a "child" of the Eighties (well ok, a teenager!) I had an old Sinclair ZX81 which I used to have to progam myself in BASIC (Beginners Allpurpose Symbolic Instruction Code) if I wanted it to do anything. It took ages to get any programme to work!. I then moved onto a BBC Microcompter Which I still have (and it WORKS- no I'm not selling it!) I also recently found a couple of wesites which emulators of these and other lovely golden oldies plus the games in ROM form. I have had lots of fun playing original Elite, Fletchers Castle and Chuckie Egg and many other games. Does anyone remember these computers or games? What were your favourites and which games used to annoy you?

| | 2. DiamondDogs (366) | 3 months ago | When I was a kid, some friends of mine always had the newest and greatest technologies. My friend said "hey, do you want to play a flight simulator game on the computer?". I said, " Oh yeah, that'd be great!". He put a cassette into the computer and then went and sat down on the couch. I said, "what are you doing, aren't we going to play the simulator?" Of course he was waiting for it to load in, so 90 mins later I got to look at these blocks staggering around on the screen. Not too impressive at all.

| sezziek (21) | 3 months ago | Hey the good old days huh? I remember! What computer did he have? My brother had a Commodore 64 with a tape recorder. You can still get the games ( if you want to wait 90 mns to play them) Thanks for your post- I have a cheezy grin on my face now!

DiamondDogs (366) | 3 months ago | Lol, yes that was it, the Commodore 64. If you learnt to use one of those, it's just another example of totally useless information. Although I heard at one stage, NASA was looking for those old computers because the parts could be useful to them. I'm sure NASA must've updated their systems by now.

| | 3. xfahctor (5130) | 3 months ago | LOL! I started on a screaming commador vic 20. I saw someone in this thread mention the old cassette tape drive you used to lods programs,,lol..those were the days. Then I got up to tthe 64 and shortly after that was the commadore PLUS 4, the one with the 4 or 5 software programs built in. I moved up to a commadore 128 soon after, it came with "GEOS" operating system one of the first graphical operating systems, I was finaly introduced to the 5 1/4 floppy drive at this time too. That whole system probably had less processing power as a simple mp3 player does today.

| sezziek (21) | 3 months ago | Thank you for sharing!- The fun we had on the old pc's even though we laugh now! I still enjoy my BBC with it's 5 1/4 floppys. Some of the games are classics and can be hacked to make easier or more difficult. My husband also has an Amiga which he enjoys playing Pinball Fantasies and Speedball 2. My personal favourite are Battlechess and Populus!

| | 5. rosdimy (1877) | 3 months ago | My first home computer was the Oric 1. Not long after that I upgraded to the Oric Atmos, with 48kb of useable memory. It did not take long for me to get the hang of Oric BASIC. I created a few programs for my own use, and modified many others. The experience enabled me to write a program on a BBC.
The only commercial program that I had were OricMunch whic was tougher than PacMan, and a program where the task was to kill a certain number of rats in a given time.
All that I had were destroyed in a fire. But the memories still linger on.

| sezziek (21) | 3 months ago | Wow! really? The old pcs were great for learning on weren't they? My brother became a programmer because he got used to hacking the old Commodore 64 games. I remember the Oric but never used it. I'm so sorry you lost your treasures in a fire- they would be priceless now!!

rosdimy (1877) | 3 months ago | Yes, it was great and fun.
Programmers had to be creative because of the small amount of available memory. That was how I learnt to use subroutines, similar to the use of procedures. As a result the programs I created were compact. Back in my country, a tuition student of mine started getting Ax for his programs, whereas the average of his class was C. He used the same method, something to be slightly proud of.
