virtual presence applications

It seems the goal of marketers of technology companies is to provide the fastest possible data speed to a mobile user. Then to provide all kinds of applications that would make life much easier including voice, data, SMS, video and virtual presence. It seems virtual presence would allow e.g. a person to respond an "online" fire alarm at home and do what's needed to address the crisis e.g. robotics intervention etc. That would be great. But is that the most technology can do? Could there be more? Any ideas?
