The true value of compassion

I felt I would share this with you, it is a thing that is so often misunderstood and this seems to me to state it very well. Compassion is characterized as promoting the aspect of allaying suffering. Its function resides in not [enduring] others' suffering. It is manifested as non-cruelty. Its proximate cause is to see helplessness in those overwhelmed by suffering. It succeeds when it makes cruelty subside, and it fails when it produces sorrow. - Buddhaghosa, "Visuddhimagga"

In our world of busy lives and business, we sometimes become numb or hard hearted to the sufferings of others as much as those of our own selves. I think it is very important to be sensitive and compassionate to others, otherwise we make machines out of ourselves, in this machine age.

because of our busy lives we forget to show compassion and alot of people do get hard hearted but in my job you have to show compassionate and if anybody out there ever forget the meaning of compassion just walk into your nearest rest home and then tell me your heart dont fill the love and the compassion that is showen. our elderly people have more love and compassion than they can share.

That is a great definition savypat! I think alot of people think of compassion as being sad for someone else but it is really just identifying with their pain. Great discussion!

A compassionate person develops an eye for spotting the qualities that make each person special. There is no doubt that we all have to earn a living, but as human beings, we have to show compassion to our fellow human beings who are at this time unable to care for themselves. A compassionate heart can achieve miracles.

I really love that, thank you for sharing it. I think compassion is all about seeing ourselves in another person, in other words to walk in someone else’s shoes. Only then we can show real understanding and compassion. Compassion is about appreciating another’s plight as if it was our own. Compassion is the realisation that we are all in this together and that peace will come when we all join as one.

Good morning, Pat. I tend to agree with this. It reminds me of another saying I like, though I may not have the wording exactly right (the meaning still comes through: Sympathy says "I'm sorry," and runs away. Empathy says, "How can I help you?" and comes to stay. Karen

I think I do have some compassion within me. I know for a fact that I am passionate, but I'm sure I have at least a little compassion too. :-) I value it in others, so much! A compassionate person is someone I'd like to hang around, all the time! Heehee! I think they are a gift to this world and I'd like to learn to be more compassionate too. :-D

Hi savypat, that is deep! Frankly the first two lines are bouncers. The third, fourth, and fifth are understood, and the fifth is most logical. But, I would rather u explain what the first two lines are supposed to convey. My comprehension of English is, as u must have realized, way behind many people. If u give me sentences with that much of depth, I'll just tend to gape, and ask can u chew it and let me know in simpler sentences? Hope u will do that. Have a nice day. :)

First line, important words are allaying suffering. Second line is not enduring other's suffering. I don't know how to make this any clearer, remember it is not my statement, just one I found interesting and passed along. Thanks

Wow that's deep. Good one. I feel compassion is very important in our world and still has it's place, although the way the world is these days, I see plenty of people who care little about other people or their surroundings, they only care about themselves. Is it a symptom of our world population, overcrowding, more competition? I don't know the answer to that, but someday maybe humanity will find a way to co-exist in peace.

Compassion, to me, simply means, allowing ourselves to be touched by the pain and misry of another. However, how can we truly understand one's pain if we've never walked in their shoes.

Compassion will arise when we don't think about ourselves or only about our near and dear ones. All around we see people in difficulties due to several reasons. When we lend a helping hand to alleviate this difficulty or suffering we contribute our bit to improving the lot of people.Heartless and cruel people can only be countered by someone who has the power or strength do so,hence cruelty can be put under check by a person who is strong and righteous at the same time. When we fail in our attempt to check cruelty the result is sadness and sorrow.

'It succeeds when it makes cruelty subside, and it fails when it produces sorrow.' That is incredible!..Unfortunately, too many folks don't seem to want to see such social responsibilities in so pure a light. It would indeed improve the people world were folks more willing to create, for others, what they so readily demand for themselves. Thank you! ENJOY!
