Black Cats |
|
We saw an article recently that there is a large amount of black cats at the cat shelter that are not being adopted because people think they are bad luck. We have a black cat that is the sweetest little boy cat. He has been nothing but good luck for us. He is very easily frightened. The shelter told us that he was abused. He came to the shelter in the fall of the year after Halloween. My question is: Would you consider adopting a black cat into your family? Why or why not? If you believe they are bad luck, what facts do you base your opinion on?

1. lynnemg (3590) | 4 months ago | I would adopt a black cat, as a matter of fact, I love black cats. They don't bring bad luck, in my opinion, they are just cats that happen to be black in color. I think that a lot of times, superstitions like this one cause people to bring on their own bad luck.

sysdexlicwriter (1139) | 4 months ago | Thank you for looking at this subject through the eyes of love and understanding instead of superstition. I believe you are right about superstitions like this one causing people to bring bad luck to themselves. I wonder if people ever look into the history of where this all started from? It does make me curious as to where this whole idea comes from.

2. savypat (7842) | 4 months ago | I have had several black cats and the color makes no difference to me. I think they are beautiful. I remember as a child being read Kipling's Jungle book and thinking how beautiful the panther was in that story.

sysdexlicwriter (1139) | 4 months ago | I appreciate your positive words about black cats. Our black cat looks like a miniature panther and I actually found a breed of cat in a picture book that was bred to look like a miniature panther. It is called a Bombay. I love the relationship you draw to the panther in the Jungle Book. Thank you for your kind response.

3. graceandowen (1402) | 4 months ago | Hi sysdexlicwriter, May I ask where you come from? I live in the UK and actually here its meant to be GOOD luck to have a black cat cross your path, But i do know that other contries differ on there black cat superstitions. And superstitions is exactly what they are in my opinion. I have a black cat, he is also a rescue cat His name in nemo and he is now 5 and half years old and the most adorable cat I know. I love him to bits and he has never bought me bad luck, I wouldnt say he has bought me much good luck either though lol. But I never even thought about luck when I adopted him and I wouldnt have had a different cat

sysdexlicwriter (1139) | 4 months ago | I am from the United States and it really bothers me that this time of year, getting ready for Halloween, there are black cats items on display everywhere in our stores showing them with their backs arched. I think that this holiday really does an injustice to a cat who had no choice on what color fur they were born with. Our cats are all so precious to us and it makes me really mad that people here from time to time hurt black cats due to meanness and misinformation.
| |
|
|
graceandowen (1402) | 4 months ago | I agree and Its wrong to judge a cat by the colour of its fur just as it is to jugde a person by the colour of their skin. I love both of my cats, I have the black cat and a tabby cat and I wouldnt care what colour they were, I didnt choose them for thier fur, I chose them because of their personalities. Some people are just silly if they believe in daft superstitions
| |
|
|
sysdexlicwriter (1139) | 4 months ago | We choose our animals by personalities also! Although, I am always a pushover for the really snarly cats that hiss and seem angry. I pick them because I am afraid that no one else will. That's why my family members go with me when I am looking for a cat for our family. They bring me back into balance as far as what kitty will fit with the family.

sysdexlicwriter (1139) | 4 months ago | Hello hornswaggled, I love this story about the good spelling test and your love for black cats. We have had many funny moments in our house with our Zorro. He does blend in with anything dark so we are always playing "where's Zorro." I think that is why he is such a good mouser.
| |
|
|
hornswaggled (1969) | 4 months ago | I think your right! I believe nature gives them this coat for that very reason...and I love them....our littlest one is called peanut because he didn't have the ability to nurse correctly and was failing. I brought him into the house and called the vet. He said that sometimes kittens have a problem absorbing the nutrients through the liver with a valve problem. But he said to supplement feed him as much as I could and it might correct itself. It did and he is almost as big as his brothers...and he is adorable!

6. Weirdology (407) | 4 months ago | We got a black kitten from an animal shelter about two years ago. We weren't looking for a black kitten, but when we got to the shelter there were soooo many black cats there, a lot of them kittens. So we got a black one. Me and my mother were confused, because we've been to animal shelters before and have never seen anything like this.
Where I live there are a few people who don't like black cats. There is a high percentage of fundamentalist Catholics here and black cats aren't really seen as bad luck, but rather evil. Some people here believe that black cats help witches. Although I always knew about these apparent beliefs that people have in my state, because I heard about them second hand from other people, I didn't think there were many that actually believed in it because I never met anyone who did. And come on, it's the 21st century. But then there was a whole group of guys in one of my high school classes who truly believed this and they said that black cats should be killed. They only mentioned it because a similar subject was brought up by the teacher. That made me think, "How many other people out there believe this, but I just never know about it, because the subject doesn't come up?" It's scary to think that people still think like this!
The black cat myth was my first thought when seeing the cats in the shelter, but I didn't actually think it could be a reason why. The people who hate black cats are a minority in the Catholic religion where I live. So I thought it was just a coincidence. But now after reading this post I'm not so sure. We haven't been to an animal shelter since we got our last cat, so I don't know how it is now. I didn't think it would stay like that. But now I'm curious if there's still a high number of black cats at that same animal shelter.

|
|
sysdexlicwriter (1139) | 4 months ago | Yes, we are in the 21st century and that was one of the reasons I was really surprised when we read the article about our animal shelter not being able to adopt black cats. I guess if you tell yourself that an innocent little cat is evil, you could convince yourself of it. I don't think it helps to use them as Halloween symbols to keep the whole thing going. It makes me so mad that our little boy was abused. It has taken him nearly three years to trust us. We are very careful to always be gentle and soft spoken with him. He is the biggest baby of all of our cats.

sysdexlicwriter (1139) | 4 months ago | I am thinking that black cats must be very special to you and that you appreciate them greatly. I hope this discussion gets people thinking outside of the box if they are opposed to black cats and maybe open their hearts to some cats that need a home. Thank you for your post. This is so neat to picture your family of cats in my mind as I read your post.

8. tattylashes (4295) | 4 months ago | since i was a little girl i have had numerous black cats, look a my avatar, i have one now, and i had her sister not so long ago who sadly passed away not so long ago, i don't believe that black cats are bad luck, all the times i have had black cats i have never had bad luck, even my cats sisters kittens wer black, some people are superstitious and some aren't, i am one that doesn't believe that black cats are bad luck...if anything they are lucky...

tattylashes (4295) | 4 months ago | lol, what a lovely name for a cat, zorro...mine is called Dusty, her sister is our namesake in here, we named her after mylot, so she was called lottie, sadly she passed away recently after having her kittens, it was sad really but she's out of pain now, she was a lovely little sul, but i have her sis her and they do look very much alike.

sysdexlicwriter (1139) | 4 months ago | Our kitties mean so much. They are so much a part of our families that when they pass, they are never forgotten. I do hate to see them suffer when they are sick. I always want them to get better quickly and hold them and take care of them until they do or sadly don't. I can't imagine anyone hurting them on purpose or disliking them because of their color.
| |
|
|
tattylashes (4295) | 4 months ago | well i know a few people who don't like cats and i know someone who hurt a cat once, i saw him do it so i reported him to the police...people who hurt animals are weak and cowardly...they make me sick, i love cats and will always have cats in my life, i too hate to see my cats sick because i feel so helpless, but if they are sick, they get seen to straight away, they cannot tell us what's up so they need us to help them, mine are pretty active cats so if i notice a change then i know they need help and they get sorted out as soon as i see them sick....

9. ItalianAngel73 (130) | 4 months ago | Hi sysdexlicwriter!
I think the myth of black cats being bad luck is a terrible one and there is absolutely no truth to it at all. I had a black cat when I was a teen and he was the sweetest cat. Absolutely no bad luck befallen my family or I. I think it's great that you adopted a kitty, black or not. I would definitely consider adopting another black cat in the future if the opportunity arrises.

sysdexlicwriter (1139) | 4 months ago | When we adopted our little gray cat it was so that our older small cat could have a companion since her sister had cancer and died. I was still grieving the loss of this cat but we knew we had to do something to help the cat that remained stop grieving. We looked and looked and found a little female that would not be too big for the cat that remained. It is hard for me to go to an animal shelter because I always want to adopt all of the animals and I know I can't. We decided that we would look at this little gray cat, come home and discuss it, and then go back the next day for the adoption if we felt she was right for our family. My husband went with us and that is when our black cat made friends with my husband. The shelter had an offer to adopt a second cat for $1. I did not know how we would handle three cats, but it was the best decision we ever made. That is how our black cat came to live with us and we love him and the other two cats so much. He has been so much fun and the two little girl cats take good care of him.

10. tuckersheri (681) | 4 months ago | To think that black cats are bad luck is just a myth. To know that noone would adopt these cats because of a myth is crazy. I love cats. Cats can be so sweet and cuddley. I don't believe they are bad luck. People should relize not all myths are true. It is sad to know that these pretty cats are not being adopted due to their color being black and believing in such a myth. It is not fair to the cats to judge because of a myth that has never been proven.
