when does a doctor's advice stop being helpful and become stupid feeling? |
|
i was speaking to a friend about their terminally ill parent-and it reminded me of when my own father was dying.now,in his case,i'm sure the doctor was going by rote, and perhaps truly meant well.. but keep in mind this was a terminal case,as in immanent death.
the man had osteo (bone),lung, liver and kidney cancer. bone alone is usually a death sentence in most cases, unless amputation is possible-except in the spine, where he had it.
anyway..the doc was telling me no salt.no sugar. no coffee..no fatty foods.all the things he still enjoyed. (by that point,he weighed 140-a bag of bones for an almost 6 ft 5 man)
hey doc..did you miss the dying part? he's my dad..and right now,if he wants a sundae, coffee and white castles at 3 am 4 hours away in new york,he's gonna get it. if he wants pork rinds and pixie sticks..he's gonna get it. donuts?yes'm.
what is the point of depriving someone whose moments are numbered? in his case it wouldn't have extended it,or made him any more comfortable.
to make this a discussion-did you ever have to care for a terminal relative, where your doctor's advice just sounded ridiculous?

3. MsTickle (8915) | 3 months ago | My Dad is 97 and diabetic. When I go to visit I always take him chocolate coated ginger and make him sweets for when I leave. At this stage of his life he has nothing else to enjoy except things he should not have. He loves salty snacks like olives and chips and salted nuts while he watches the football on TV. He loves to have a piece of cake or a couple of sweet biscuits with his cuppa. He loves jam and marmalade and he still makes his own beer, containing sugar. Take these things away from him and what does he have??? Not very bloody much!

4. hornswaggled (1940) | 2 months ago | Sorry I've missed this discussion til now....and YES that was totally idiotic! Sometimes I think doctors just spew our crap because they have nothing else they can contribute. And they want to seem like they are doing something...even if it's stupid. I had a similar experience. I was raised by my grandparents and when my grandma was dying of congestive heart failure; they put her on a liquid free diet. She was only allowed one or two sips with pills. The doc had given her about 4 months to live. She wouldn't eat and she was miserable and so I asked her if she could have anything she wanted to eat or drink what would it be. She said what I thought....a strawberry shake. So I left the ICU and went to the Dairy Queen and got the biggest shake they had. They started throwing a fit as soon as I brought that in to her...the head nurse was furious and she said she'd throw me out and call the doctor....blah blah blah.... I said call the doc...so I talked to him and he listened to me explaining that with this death sentence that he gave my grandma was getting everything she wanted....he got real quiet and then said I was right. I put the head battle ax on the phone and you should have seen her face get red......and she left me alone to let grandma drink her shake.....which she drank down to the last drop...

scarlet_woman (8849) | 2 months ago | oh man..i'm sure i would have been thrown out, cause i would have went off on that nurse.at least that doc did see the light,it's pointless-even if it kills them it's not going to prolong anything but misery.

hornswaggled (1940) | 2 months ago | Isn't that the truth?!? I guess the old saying that docs used to have "First do no harm" is really gone isn't it? I try to use that in my business of herbs everyday. If we don't make things worse; but don't make them better they are still ahead than what docs do....make them worse so much of the time.
| |
|
|
scarlet_woman (8849) | 1 month ago | oh no kidding..and i've never heard a herbologist talk down to a person they were supposed to be helping either. some docs need a kick in the butt for their bedside manner.for starters.

hornswaggled (1940) | 1 month ago | Well there is a reason we are so careful. Actually more than one. First; we are not allowed to diagnose, or treat or say we can cure any illness. It's against the law in the states. Two we believe that the body is out of balance and to bring it back to balance we need to feed it. Herbs are basically food. So by feeding it really great stuff it can actually heal itself better than it can a lot of times with traditional medicine.
Third....and most important in my book is that we believe and are taught that the body has a "mission statement" (for lack of a better phrase) that it gets from the brain. So if we are told that we will die and we believe it we WILL die....even if we wouldn't have. We herbalists like to call this the "voodoo hex" because of it's amazing ability to destroy us with just words.
So the next time a doc tells you something make him prove it....he won't be able to prove anything....after all you are you....and YOU know what's best for you. A positive attitude has saved countless lives.....

scarlet_woman (8849) | 1 month ago | oh don't i know..i have seen people go downhill by power of suggestion. especially when they tell them there's no hope. as long as you're still breathing, the game's not over i say.

6. purplealabaster (800) | 5 days ago | Yes, when my sister was dying, they had her on a special, limited diet, and she was not very happy about it. At the time, we did not realize just how quickly she was going to die, so we tried to follow the diet for the most part, hoping that it would help extend her life a few precious days or perhaps even weeks. We did sneak some treats in for her, though, and I am very glad that we did, because we did not have even the shortest amount of time that they predicted we would have with her. Now, I wish that we had not even pretended to adhere to their strict rules, but we were trying to do the right thing by helping her to live the fullest and longest life possible. I know that the little things that we did for her she really enjoyed, though, like the special dark chocolate treats that we could slip into our pockets and sneak to her when the doctors and nurses weren't looking.
