What other foods foods rich in calcium?  email this discussion to a friend?

When we heard of calcium, the first food that comes to our mind is "milk" and other milk related products. My 8 year old daughter doest want to drink milk anymore. And I hate of being see here with bone problems in the future. Can anyone recommend what other foods that are rich in calcium?

salmon, spinach, green leafy and other green leafy vegetables, tofu, al,onds, some beans, orange, kale, broccoli, sardines, brussel sprouts just to name a few I could go on longer.....

It's good that you're concerned about her calcium intake because it's definitely important. If she won't drink milk, is that just white milk? Will she drink chocolate milk or strawberry milk? I know it's not a replacement but I remember when I was pregnant, some women in my prenatal class could not drink white milk and the nurse said even chocolate milk is better than no milk. If you make it yourself with the syrup, it really only takes a very small amount to convince a child that it's not white milk :) Does your daughter eat other dairy products such as yogurt or cheese? They have those drinkable yogurts now that some kids seem to like (one of my did, anyway). There are also the yogurt "tubes" that can be frozen so it's more like an ice cream treat than just yogurt. If she likes orange juice, you can buy one that is fortified with calcium.

For foods that are not dairy, some that are rich in calcium are salmon, broccoli, and dark green leafy vegetables. Not necessarily popular items with younger kids, I know LOL but there are plenty of cereals that are fortified with calcium too.

Good luck to you both! I hope you find some things to replace the milk for now... and kids are ever-changing. Maybe it won't be long and she'll be back to drinking her milk again! happy

Besides what people have already mentioned, there is a plethera of foods out there that are now coming in "calcium fortified" versions now. Even the bread on which you make your sandwiches can be calcium fortified now, if you buy the right kinds.

But keep things like dairy and cheese in her diet, ice cream as a trat can provide a good amount of calcium!

And if it really comes down to it, there are plenty of calcium supplements out there as well. Multivitamins for children that have added calcium even come in funn "gummy bear" chewable of bubble gum versions now!

calcuim is one of important minerals of the body especially for kids, if your kids doesn't want to have milk try yogurt(1cup is 240-400mg of calcuim)brocoli (1cup is 160-180mg. of calcium) tufo (500mg of calcuim) sardines (500mg of calcuim) happy
