Yes, finally both the Summer and Para Olympics are going to South America!
Yesterday, after 3 rounds of voting, the hosting is finally being awarded to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. This vote had certainly come a long way and not forgetting many painstaking efforts.
It was really exciting to watch the awarding ceremony. Chicago, USA was knocked out on the first round; followed by Tokyo, Japan on the second round. With Madrid, Spain and Rio De Janeiro, Brazil left, I had anticipated it to be a daunting task for Brazil as the voting panel had 22 members from the European community. Also, I felt that the panel may have other thoughts as Brazil is also hosting the soccer World Cup in 2014 and that there is some economic consideration there. But, I was pleasantly shocked when the results revealed that Brazil had 66 votes as opposed to Spain who had only managed 32 votes.
Euphoria, celebrations and congratulations to Brazil! Well done and I am looking forward to both 2014 and 2016 where the world will meet for the World Cup and the Summer/Para Olympics respectively.

That's exciting! I hear Rio is a really amazing place. Perhaps if I don't get selected to win the Amy Lowell Award in 2012, than I'll reapply for it in 2016 and go to Rio to watch the Olympics. The Amy Lowell Award is the award given to women who write poetry for them to leave the country for a year to gain new experience and write. I was planning to apply for it in 2012 and then go see as part of my travels both the London Olympic and para -Olympic games. If that doesn't work out, it'd be really cool to go to Rio. I don't think the games have ever been held in South America that I can recall. I imagine soccer is going to be insane because Brazilians are insane when it comes to soccer anyway.

cripfemme,
I am sorry that you are unsuccessful with your application to the 2012 London Games but I hope that you will be successful for 2016 Rio Olympics.
Brazil will really be an interesting venue indeed and I really hope that the Games will improve the country especially the slum areas and their high unemployment rate. The country is indeed crazy about soccer and equally passionate with their Samba as well.
All the best for 2016 then, and take care.

today2009,
I think you must have watched the live telecast of the Olympics voting at Copenhagen, Denmark. It was indeed quite exciting and I am happy for the outcome at the end of the day.
Frankly speaking, I felt that it is about time the Games goes to South America and I just cannot find a better country than Brazil which is incidentally my favorite soccer country team.
Besides, Brazil has also worked very hard for their sportsmen and sportswomen in other fields of sports like swimming, tennis, fencing, volleyball and judo. So, in a sense, Brazil has proven to themselves to be worthy country to host the Olympic Games.
Happy myLotting.
