I have never read Manga. I dont think they are available for sale in India. We get Tintin, Asterix and Obelix, Phantom and a few other comic books around here. Indian comic books that are famous are Tinkle and Amar chitra katha. Tinkle is basically for kids and Amar chitra katha is based on Indian mythology, both of them are of very good quality. In India the perception is that comic books are for kids. Anyway, I think Asterix and obelix books are very good, and grew up reading Tinkle. And then there is calvin and hobbes. One graphic novel I would like to lay my hands on is 'V for Vendetta'. I have seen the movie.
Are comic books famous in Italy? I would definitely like to read manga, if I am not mistaken it is the only famous non-american comic.
On a different note, I am a chronic and serial collector. Would you like to exchange some comic books with me? Let me know.

Italy has a tradition of japanese cartoons being aired on TV, most of the cartoons we get are anime even though most of them are liable to censorship and some episodes are cut or completely changed. For instance, in "Aqua age" the main charachter gets her period for the first time but the episode was completely changed into something different. If I'm not mistaken they changed it so the girl was having a bad dream instead of cramps and her parents congratulated her for her birthday or something like that lol it's absurd. Years ago we started to get manga tankobon and they're now pretty famous, especially those from top-anime such as Naruto, Bleach and the like. Let's say that both normal comic strips and manga era famous in Italy, my sister even buys chinese and korean manga. Oh and the "comics are for kids" thing is completely wrong, most of the manga I have are for adults only or for a mature audience, like it's written on the cover. Even my professors at University said that comics are a form of art which people should considerate more. One of my professors suggested that I included something about manga and comic books in my thesis, so to speak :) my dad is over 60 and he's been reading comic for years :)

i read manga online. i often check for updates on naruto and bleach. i've read hana kimi and many others. they're pretty interesting plus they have pictures so i don't have to imagine what the characters look like. most japanese/korean/taiwanese dramas were based on mangas like boys over flowers/meteor garden, hana kimi, goong/princess hours, etc. some mangas were made a series like naruto, bleach, vampire knight, and many others.

I like manga more than merican comics, too many conlicting morality in american comics but in manga i feel touch by the chivalric plot, my favorite manga would be naruto, inuyasha, fist of the north star and city hunter, i like city hunter very much it's awesome.

yeah. i like it how the plot in manga are like played by chracters that are like average everyday me and you, not some super hero that can fire atomic bobms out of its ears or something.

I'm also something of a manga addict. I've been reading it for years nows. I used to go out and buy around 10-15 manga volumes a month. Those were the good old days. These days, I mostly go to sites like onemanga or mangafox to read my manga.
Ah, you're reading Gintama? That has got to be one of the most random ones out there. It's hilarious. If you haven't already started yet, I'd really recommend watching the anime. It is just as good and funny.
I can't really think of one favorite manga. It's kind of hard to choose because I've probably read hundreds of different series so choosing one is hard. But some of my favorites are:
Sports: I'm pretty much a fan of any type of sports series.
-Slam Dunk
-I'll CKBC
-Prince of Tennis
-Initial D
-Over Drive
Shounen
-Katekyo Hitman Reborn
-Akeboshi (my current obsession!)
-Rurouni Kenshin
Shoujo: I kind of gravitate towards series that has strong heroines. I can't stand those weak and whiny females that only depend on the main guy to bail them out.
-Skip Beat
-Mars (I actually went out and bought this whole series in one go)
-Red River aka Anatolia Story
-Basara
Manhwa (Korean)
-King of Hell
-iD_eNTITY aka Yureka
-The Breaker
-1/2 Prince
I suppose those are just some of my favorites or the ones I'm currently reading. There's a lot more I can name off but these are the ones at the top of my head at the moment

My favorite is manga is Gunslinger Girl and I read it online. It's still ongoing, but scanlations are going slow. I even resorted to "read" the raws, but I guess I have no choice but to wait. This is why I sometimes prefer to just watch anime.
