Solicitors peeking in your windows... totally wrong... but what do you do?  email this discussion to a friend?

I was just sitting on my couch watching a movie and minding my own business. I have vertical blinds so from the street people really can't see in. However obviously people on the porch can see in if they look. So I'm sitting here and I have the blinds turned so that I can see people in the driveway and such, this is how I usually do it so no one can surprise me at my door.

I see a young teenager coming up, walking across the grass no less, to the door. As he's coming up, he must have seen the tv and he was really looking to see what I was watching. It was just A Knight's Tale, so nothing bad or anything, but the point is, why was he so intensely looking at my tv. I gave him the stare down and eventually he turned to see me starring him down, so he quickly put the flyer on the door and left.

In this day and age, people scope out houses to see what they got so they can come back and rob them. This was the first thing I thought of when I saw this kid starring at my TV so intensely. I don't think he was really planning to rob my house now or later, but still that's the thought that crosses your mind!

In other instances, I have seen solicitors peeking in my window when I wasn't answering the door, to see if I was home I figured. That's wrong too!

Basically, don't look in my dang window for any reason unless you think I am dying and you want to save my life. Seriously. Strangers have no business peeking in my window whether it is to see if I'm home or what. Knock on the door, if I don't answer, leave.

What would you do if you had this teenager doing that? I went to the door and watched him walk to the neighbors houses to leave flyers. Then I saw he was with an older woman who was giving flyers on the other side of the street. I know some people hire these teens to do the flyers, but maybe they need to teach them some manners!

It sucks that now-a-days the only way you can get pure privacy is to shut all your drapes completely. That's not fair. I should be able to sit in my living room, get some sunlight, and not have to worry about other's coming by and peeking in while they do their soliciting.

Oh, by the way, I have a No Soliciting sign which most of them ignore. I have seen the sign work for a few people, but most don't even care.

As for me, I do not look in people's windows, door, etc. unless something is going on that causes me to take a peek. I am sure that most people have done it though, even if it was not an intentional thing. I do not think it s to big of a problem, unless it becomes inapprpiate or on a regular basis, at which time I would ask them to stop, what they are looking for or call the police.

We've had quite a problem with people stopping by here trying to get us to buy this or that or trying to get us to do something or other. I'm not sure why people think they're going to accomplish by always knocking on the door but solicitors bug me most of all.

I haven't noticed anyone peeking in our windows just yet but I have noticed that people are stopping by quite often to try and sell us stuff we surely don't want.

And I do agree with you, it's rude to look into someone elses house. I don't want people eying my home or my belongings and I really don't want people peeking in to see what I'm doing. It's none of their business! Maybe the kid was looking to see if he'd be chased off if he put something on your door. I know some people can be pretty mean to people putting advertisments on doors so maybe he was seeing if he'd be chased off or not?

Well I don't think he was looking to see if he could leave something at the door. Something caught his attention all of a sudden and suddenly he was starring at my TV. It was only when he glanced left and saw me starring him down that he put the flyer and moved on. Maybe he just thought my TV was nice, or wondered what the movie was, he seemed innocent enough but at the same time I don't know why he even thought it was OK to look in my window.

I think this calls for a strategically placed booby-trap, suzi. I love the idea of a string triggered pail of cold water....
Whooooosh! hahaha

or how about sneaking up from the side (inside) and jumping right faceto face, on the inside window and yelling Boo! Followed with, "I'm calling the cops you peeping Tom. Stay right where you are!" hee hee hee, somehow i think that either fightback measure would render you a spam-free and visual invasion-free experience from that guy for life.

but i agree with ya...

Haha well if this kid had any intentions to "break in" in the future, I think the fact that he saw me seeing him would have turned him off. The more I think back, I think it was just an innocent kid, he didn't seem like the "punk" type. But he needs to learn not to look in people's windows! Plus, walking across the grass stinks too b/c they end up walking right past my window.

Maybe I should put a sign on the lawn like some ppl do "No Trespassing" :-D But then they would look at our messy lawn and wonder why :) I've seen people with nice lawns put signs like that, but ours is just ehhh.

Thanks for the tips! I actually thought about if I had my camera closer i could have snapped a pic to scare him off :-D This is a good reason to get security cameras though.

Yep I guess so! I have been going through past discussions to give out best responses. It's strange how certain discussions I write will get dozens of responses and others only 1-2. Oh well :) You win some, you lose some!
