Are there really any ' stupid questions '? |
|
Some people say there's no such thing as a ' stupid ' or ' dumb question '. That may be the case but sometimes I wonder. For example, I have seen some people come to this site, asking questions concerning other sites, instead of looking at the FAQ section. I am thinking they do that just to boost their posts and earnings here, but it gets annoying. I have often wanted to post something like " why dont you take a look at THEIR help section first? ". -lol- End venting rant!;-)

Some people say that asking "are you okay?" to someone after s/he's been in some sort of accident or injury is a stupid question, while I think that asking that question is just to show you're concerned about their condition. In your example though, I would just say that those people who don't read the FAQ's are just plain lazy.

In addition there are also topics that promote hatred, how can they be rightly labeled? That being said, there are also "stupid answers", answers that are completely off tangent and has nothing to do and not related to topics being discussed. The implication is, the one who answered did not really spend time reading the topic very well and didn't know anything about what is going on. Not being able to understand the subject because of linguistic differences is entirely a different matter.

4. greenfeathers (663) | 3 months ago | We're taught to be inquisitive..to ask questions and expect answers. Granted, there are inane questions but I think that folks asking about other sites are looking for first hand accounts...For instance, there's been a rash of sites recently that have been doing a bait and switch with $ if you join and once in a change of policy eleminates the $. So before I join such a site anymore I want to know who's behind it so I know whether to expect a switch in policy. Its usually easier to ask a group of folks rather than muddle thru trying to dig up the information by myself. ENJOY!

Or maybe they want a quick answer, or just someone to do the work for them. If I see a question that I don't want to answer or like, then I'll just ignore it, or look for some questions that are appealing to me.

10. o0Tora0o (261) | 3 months ago | I had several teachers in grade school who would say that the only stupid question was the one a student didn't ask. I think that's true to a point--sometimes it's necessary to break things down into very basic steps to understand it completely. And exactly what makes up a "stupid" question can be debated. I work in a bookstore, and I know that books by a popular author will usually come out in hardcover several months to a year or more before a paperback version is available. I get asked several times a week if new releases like Dan Brown's Lost Symbol are out in paperback yet, but I don't see those questions as stupid. My customers are trying to get the best value for their money, and even on sale hardcovers are pretty expensive.
On the other hand, I've come in contact with a lot of inquisitive idiots recently. Like you mentioned, there are a lot of people who ask the same questions about other sites here. I'm not sure those qualify--I've noticed that a lot of the people who ask that sort of thing are from countries where English is taught as a second language. I think it's more likely that most of those people don't realize that the FAQ and terms and conditions of sites should spell out everything they need to know about the site.
But when you get a guy who walks up to the box office window at a closed movie theater and, when he's informed that the theater is closed and the cashier can't sell him any tickets because there is no money in the register, asks if the theater sells shotguns... THAT is a stupid question. I really wish I was making that one up, but I witnessed the entire exchange. -_-;
Sometimes I have a really hard time not giving a link to the "Let Me Google That For You" site in responses. I think I've been spending a bit too much time on the Bad Service community over at Livejournal... http://lmgtfy.com/
