Yet I tend to approach this problem from another point of view.

Left or right extremes (and not ony, but that's another story) are actually one and the same.

Ultranationalism, personality (the Leader) cult/worship, few controlling the all others, the Leader is the one who know all and his solutions are unique and best, the Leader teaching are priceless and must be followed, any counter-Leader-opinion is counter the universal goodness, full and unconditioned obedience in face of the Leader's demands/requests/teachings, don't think, do what you are told to do, ... fascism, communism, bloody same.
And if you agree this above, is somehow obviously there's one more "system" working on exactly same parameters: religion. (love for God, blif in God, common sense and similar stuff have NOTHING to do with religion; never had, have not and will never have.)

While the Leader is "promoted" this way by his close followers, a "gang" is formed. Or Dynasty, or group of interests .. While they know there will be people or groups against this, in order to protect themself and thm commun interests, they must grab some other small groups of people willing to do ANYTHING in exchange for some privilleges all others will never even dream to have. Those groups are choosen so that members to be people able to do ANYTHING to protect them masters. Including cheating, violence, blackmail, lies, force, with no scruples.

This is the only way to accomplish total obedience. So is all crowd psyhology and while systems are similar and only names different, is no way to tell which one of the 2 inspired from the other. More likely both have inspired from religions ... Who always promoted the 'divide et impera' (there is us and the infidels), 'you are with us or against us' (belive and do not search, obey or you are the devil), 'the purpose always excuse the deeds' (for few/some religionized worth numberless other to vanish) and so on.

The most funny and intriguant fact is that both fascism and communism are "products" resulted from religion evolution as socio-political system, both being in fact childrens of religion, yet both violently deny and reject religion.

Hi wmraul, is this the number of people here to show an interest in this, quite remarkable.
I'd never really considered the two things as so identical in tactic before, but you are right, gang mentality, control through fear, the disappeared, the secret police, fear of the neigbhours, they are all used as a way of control in both fascism and communism, so the two being separated by ideology is nothing more than an excuse to subject the people to their control. I suppose this is is where genuine democracies, run without fear, have the edge as a way forward.
So the whole idea of a war against communism didn't really have anything to do with ideology on one side, just the fear of that ideology on the other side.
And the absolute need for control and power, and to retain those two things, resulte in millions of lives being lost.
