Confused about what Americans and Canadians test blood sugar |
|
I have a book about preventing diabetes and a couple of magazines that tell you how to reverse or never get it in the first place, but they are from the States. I am a little confused about the terms. I am Canadian and here we use a single number plus decimal to indicate one's sugar level after the fast after supper and take the test in the morning test. I hear that the Americans use a different method. I would like translate this in Canadian terms. Could someone help me? It would be easier for me as I get my information from both American and Canadian sources.

1. Hatley (20542) | 2 months ago | hi suspenseful how are you doing with your diabetes? I am an American who gets confused to in talking to one of my Canadian friends who said her blood sugar was a single number plusdecimal, where I am going I just tested at 130 and she is going what is that, I am 7.50 and I am going what is that? I am going to have to google this as I do not have the conversion table where I can find it. I have never heard of reversing Diabetes save when they have that stomach surgery that bands up a large part of your stomach so you only can eat small amounts of food, there they have been able to reverse it. but other than that once a diabetic always a diabetic. let me google and get back to you.

suspenseful (17072) | 2 months ago | I figure you can reverse it or keep metobolic syndrome or pre diabetes from turning into full blown diabetes with diet and exercise. My blood sugar is going down and I do not want the staples in my stomach. I have a niece in law who had it and well she was always cheating. I do not know what my blood sugar is now. I do not want to get one of those glucose meters (hate needle in the finger and besides if you do it enough times you sort of run out of places to pr1ck( meaning poke with a needle) and besides getting one test every three months is good enough.) I do want to know if I go to the States for a visit and drop in to see a doctor and he says that my blood sugar is at 120 or 100 or something, whether to faint or to jump for joy.

Hatley (20542) | 2 months ago | hi again oh suspenseful those meters can help you to know what foods raise or lower your blood sugarlevels'they are now super easy to use, and the needle is so tiny that it does not hurt, plus you can use and reuse all your fingers' over and over, going by a1cs does not help daily lifeas you need to know each day how you are doing so you can alter your foods, and no you can not reverse diabetes, my g. if that were true'do you not think my doctor would have done that y ears back,do not kid yourself once you are fullblown you are a diabetic you have to learn how to control it and then just get on with your life, do not let it control you.

|
|
suspenseful (17072) | 2 months ago | My doctor has not put recommended any of those meters yet. I think it is once he says, that means that your case is hopeless that you are full blown diabetic, not pre diabetic or if you eat proper, it will reverse, but for the rest of your life, etc. And since I only get tested every three months, he feels if I lose a little more weight, I will not have that worry.

book1962 (14517) | 2 months ago | hi I also would be lost without my glucometer to measure morning blood sugar every morning when I get up and thats way before I can have breakfast. I want to know every morning where I am for the day and what I am allowed to eat with the blood sugar level I have when I wake up.

| pattiurlvd (49) | 2 months ago | It's not that you can reverse diabetes, because you can't. Once a diabetic always a diabetic. What you can do though is manage to keep it down closer to the "normal" range.
Just recently my doctor said I was doing so well that she wanted me to stop the medicine for 3 months and try and control the diabetes with diet alone and then my A1C level will be tested at the end of the 3 months to see if diet alone can control it.
So it's not really reversing diabetes it's taking good control over it.

2. GardenGerty (20240) | 2 months ago | I did not realize that until you posted it just now. I did a little search and found this informative site: http://www.diabetes-blood-sugar-solutions.com and it told me about the two different scales for diabetes. It looks as if it has a lot of other good info as well.

suspenseful (17072) | 2 months ago | I book marked it. I will have to go and read all the information, but what I learned would be very helpful. I want to know how to lower my blood sugar without going into starvation mode, and if there are any herbs that would help. I do know that cinnamon is good for it, but want to know if there are any others

3. Lindalinda (2912) | 2 months ago | Hi suspenseful, First of all you cannot reverse diabetes. Once you have it it is there for good. You can however, control it with diet, excercise and medication. Sometimes to the point where dieat and exercise alone will keep it under control. The causes of diabetes are age, overweight and or hereditary traits. Belly fat also plays a role. A person my not be overweight in general but carry a lot of weight around their middle. Secondly Americans and Europeans measure their bloodsugar in different units from Canadians. In Canada we say your fasting blood sugar should be between 5 and 7. That translates to 90 and 126 in American measurement. You have to multiply the Canadian numbers by 18 or divide the American numbers by 18. So if you measure 7.5 it is 135 in American terms. The only thing that is the same measurement is the A1C hemoglobin measurement that your doctor requests every few months. In Canada we say it should be no higher than 7, in the USA they recommend 6.5. Hope this helpf you. I would also recommend strongly that you visti the website of the Canadian Diabetic Society since you have said before that you cannot get easily to a Diabetes support group.

suspenseful (17072) | 2 months ago | My father had it. That is the whole trouble. I am trying to keep my blood sugar under control, but do not want to go into the no no diet. Another thing is that my husband does not have it. Now you may think good, but that means that I have to buy different things that he does. Next year I will have a garden but right now, unless it is in the harvest season, i have to pay more for what i get. I will check the Canadian Diabetes site because i want to find out who gave the hospital the idea that I can eat white flour stuff and no salads or raw carrots. I hope it was not them.

Lindalinda (2912) | 2 months ago | Your initial question was to find out how to convert Canadian sugar measurements into American values and Visa Versa. I sincerely hope you are clear about that part of my post. It is important to be able to convert these values if you are reading American publications. As for the hospital giving you the wrong food I can only surmise that there was a mixup when the instructions were sent to the kitchen. I do not believe for an instance that diabetes is treated differently in Manitoba.
| |
|
|
suspenseful (17072) | 2 months ago | I hope it was a mix up or they were not as up to date as the rest of Manitoba was. We are sort of a bit behind in a lot of things though. But then hospital food is not that good for you anyway. I am not going to say that the diabetic information in Manitoba is as good as everywhere else in Canada. I am a bit of a skeptic, but I do know that that hospital view of what diabetics eat now*(not what they thought ten or twenty years ago) has made me reluctant to join any diabetic club here. If they had added some more fruit and vegetables and not had just pasta and ground beef, and that white rice pudding (white rice having a high glycemic value( I would have gone to the diabetic center in our neighborhood and asked for suggestions for recipes, etc.

Lindalinda (2912) | 2 months ago | If you go the the website for the Canadian Diabetes Association you will find plenty of suggestions and also what resources are available to you. This association speaks for all Canadians. What puzzles me is if you were admitted to the hospital as a patient with diabetes, then you should have been seen by a nurse and dietician trained in diabetes who would have made up directions and sent those to the food preparation unit. On the other hand you say you are pre-diabetic. So maybe in those cases you get regular food because no special instructions are sent down. If on the other hand you were there because your husband was there and you yourself were not admitted you should have gotten no food at all. At least that is how it is in Ontario hospitals.
