What Are Some Sexist Assumptions You've Encountered and...

...how have you proven them wrong? I have a little trick that I like to play at restaurants, for example. My husband and I like to use my credit card to pay for things because I earn airmiles. If I am going to pay for a meal, I pay for it. If he is going to pay for a meal I pay for it, and he puts the money into my bank account the next morning. This allows me to collect on my card for every purchase. Anyway, my husband is quite a bit older than I am. Often at restaurants people automatically assume that because he's older, and because he's a man, he's paying, so they hand the bill to him. Tonight I decided to play a little trick on the staff at this one restaurant we went to. When the bill came, I just sat with my wallet in my hand, and my hand under the table. Hubby and I just sat there talking, watching to see what she'd do next. She put the bill on the edge of the table between us. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was one heck of a waitress, and I love how she didn't jump to assumptions. So, are there any sexist assumptions that crop up in your daily life? How do you deal with them? Do you tell people straight out that they are wrong, or do you do something clever, like I did with my wallet, to wait for the assumption to be made, and then say something? How do you react to a sexist assumption? How do you react to an advanced thinker who does not make the assumption? What interesting assumptions have you encountered? Needless to say, this waitress got a NICE TIP from us. :)

Being from the other side,I don't notice any sexist assumptions. If I invited a guy out to dinner and the wait staff gave him the bill,I would just pick it up and pay it, no problem. I guess I am not sensitive enough to see it happening .

well the "sexist" one is that the roomie and I are "partners" the one that really bother's me is that I'm her MOTHER! What? people aren't nice enough to drive a blind person, help them do things they can't without pay if they aren't related? Am I just too nice a person? I don't think so... Granted, I'm a nice person, but not too nice... after all, WHO is going to get those bowls off the top shelf? It sure isn't ME!

I try not to make assumptions about who is paying for things even in the computer business. I find though that as a female computer technician you get people who go well girls cant be a computer tech. When i first started working where i work there were some men who wouldnt leave their computer if they thought a girl was going to work on it. Needless to say we just let em think the boss was going to work on it and when it came time for them to pick it up he didnt have time to work on it so i did. We dont get NEAR as much of that as we did 4 years ago.
