whats your take on "Blackface" in entertainment? |
|
So I was checking out Yahoo News headlines and came across the article about French Vogue October issue which is SUPPOSE to be centered around "supermodels"...Unfortunately for whatever reason there werent any black supermodels in the issue..instead they "blackfaced" a white model...
http://shine.yahoo.com/ch... personally find this not only offensive to a degree but confusing...there are NUMEROUS gorgeous and still working black supermodels in the industry so why werent any of them asked to be part of the shoot?
in the article it also brings up a recent blackface moment on an Australian show that had Harry Connick Jr, who was a guest judge, up in arms (I'd heard about it briefly last week but never did look into it)....I also remember when Ted Danson showed up at I believe it was an awards show a few yrs back in black face that caused an uproar....
the end of the article (link above) asks this
We've made such progress in the battle against racism, is there really any reason anymore to use blackface? How do you feel about all the recent blackface appearances in pop culture?
so, whats your opinion on it all?

1. hiccup (6475) | 2 months ago | There is that MONGREL word again and how it is abused these days.
RACISMWhy is it always RACISM,The Australian thing in Black face was a TRIBUTE to the JACKSON FIVE,
HELLO, HELLO FOLKS, IT WAS A TRIBUTE TO THE JACKSON FIVE AND TO MICHEAL.
The only reason the crap hit the fan was CONNICK Jr did a Sinatra and spat the dummy. Oh that's right CONNICK Jr is the reborn Sinatra he thinks. Must be hard when you are no longer top billing and you are going down the ladder.
It's like Goll y W O G, people think that is RACISMWell these people should learn who Goll y W O G is before they open their mouth. Mr G.W, came from OLD DUTCH beliefs and has nothing to do with the Afro/American.
I did see some things re WHITEFACE Theatre is Theatre, People need to grow up about it all.
The only people I hear today say the "N" word are Afro/Americans, and I am not sure even if they have the right to use it the way they do.It offends me and I'm white.
If we start to take BLACK out and WHITE out of so said Entertainment/theatre/comedy, we also need to take all the colours out. Yellow Face/Red Face/
How stupid that would look.
You may think where is the white face, to start with look at CLOWNS.

sorry but you are wrong.. Golliwog was a doll created by a NEW YORKER in her story "the adventure of two dutch dolls" and was "a horrid sight, the blackest gnome. "...Golliwog was based on the black minstrels/minstrel shows of way back which were in fact, poking fun at the blacks ...So Golliwog IS racist..

hiccup (6475) | 2 months ago | Florence Upton and Enid Blyton never poked fun at the BLACKS.
As for Florence she may have been "The First to write a book about Goll y w oG in the 1890's But like many things it was taken from something else.
Now some time back I posted something on all this, we even have or did have a friend with the nic of Goll y W og this is his avatar.
It was religious and it was early dutch, they were like saints, they were good and did good things. They were a part of the OLD DITCH CHURCH beliefs.
Back to Florence, like Walt Disney she took an old story and made it "HOLLYWOOD" and claimed it as hers.
I will try to find it all, but do not hold me to it as it may take time.

Ravenladyj (17921) | 2 months ago | dang it..and I am curious to know what your take is on the French Vogue thing...do you think it was alright for them to use a white model painted up as a black person RATHER THAN use actual black supermodels?

hiccup (6475) | 2 months ago | GEES, we have plenty of black girls to do that work we don't need white skinny Minnie's with war paint on, ha ha ha,
We have a Australian Aboriginal Girl doing the cat walks in Paris, she is drop dead beautiful, and a good model. I must dig up her name, She is a honey.
That's wrong, if they are making up to look like, then why not use the real thing.
This was like the Native American (Red Indian) they used white men and even black men as Indians, but that has all changed now in the USA film industry, to act as an Native American you must have blood of. And so it should.

2. barrudaki (1262) | 2 months ago | What about Robert Downey JR. in the movie Tropic Thunder? He did an updated black face bit. Do you find that offensive too? How about Eddie Muryphy in Coming to America where he was put in white make up to play an old white jewish guy. Of course there's the Wayne brothers with their movie White Chicks.
I guess what it comes down to is since it's ok in entertainment eyes to do white face then why not allow black face since it is not taking the same meaning it did back in the 20's, 30's and 40's. As a matter of fact some of the pictures from that shoot do not portray negative stereotypes at all.
If black entertainers can do white face without being criticized then it's only fair that white entertainers can do black face without criticism.
I find this third party article lacking in a lot of areas, like no interview with the photographer or mention of why the magazine did this type of shoot. Its just a criticism of a subject they know little about. Maybe finding out the reason behind the shoot would give a better reason than the assumption of Joanna Douglas from the shine staff. If she is the reporter on this story then it should be part of her reporting skills to find out from the source then to just make an assumption without looking into the story.

Ravenladyj (17921) | 2 months ago | Ya know i've not seen tropic thunder but one of the reasons is just doenst interest me is becuse of the Downy character....that and it just looks like a seriously stupid movie LOL...White Chicks I've seen and I admit I did like that movie as with Coming to America BUT none of those flicks is along the same lines as this French Vogue thing.....ADMITEDLY though you are right, the photographer or editor of the mag or SOMEONE representing the mag should have been interviewed..thats true...

sndcain36 (2651) | 2 months ago | Both Tropic Thunder and White Chicks had a context and were appropriate. Using black face on a model rather than just hiring a black model does smack a racism to me.

|
barrudaki (1262) | 2 months ago | Sndcain can you for a fact assert the reason for the shoot was racism? Do you have a link to a different article where the photographer or a rep from the magazine are interviewed and they stated it was done because they are racist?
If you want to go on the idea that there are plenty of black models that could have been hired for shoot then well honestly there are plenty of white actresses who could of played the main characters in the movie White Chicks and they could have acted like they were black guys dressed up as white women. Also, in Coming to America they could have hired a real jewish white guy and still gotten the same comedic effect. I'm sure if hollywood would have looked they would have found a black guy to play Robert Downey Jr.'s spot in Tropic Thunder.
The fact is no one is going to know the context the magazine meant for the shoot until it comes out on the news stands and/or a rep from the magazine makes a statement about the shoot. Blindly grabbing a pitch fork and getting worked up about something that there is little information on really is not the best way to go about it.

barrudaki (1262) | 2 months ago | Raven I've only seen bits and pieces of the Tropic Thunder and White Chicks. Tropic Thunder didn't interest me because what I saw of it was not comedy. White Chicks same reason. I saw Coming to America when I was a kid and thought it was funny. If I remember correctly Rick Baker did the make up for Coming to America and he was praised for the way he was able to transform Eddie into an old white jewish guy.
I happen to think until the whole story about the photo shoot comes out that assumptions should not be taken.
