Bits for a draft | | I am trying to find a bit for my draft... Parelli says no bit but thats a safety hazard with him... I an thinking I want to french link but I don't know anything about drafts... My trainer suggested a french link pelham but I can only find them for like 200 dollars... Broke college student here. Can anyone suggest a bit for a draft that has really only been driven. He walks through most anything and I want to teach him not to. I am not really interested in using his driving bit. It doesn't sit right on his bridle.

Growing up we did ride our harness horses, but always with a "hackamore bit"...harness horses that I grew up with tended to use split bits, and tended to make them a little more hard-mouthed! Congratulations on your horse...and good luck in finding a gentle bit! Often Tack shops, have used equipment for sale, as well! Cheers!

| caecal07 (12) | 1 month ago | I just want to say that a hackamore and a bit aren't even the same thing... Then I want to know what you call a split bit? And I am aware of what your saying about tack shops but draft bits are hard to find... And riding bits are even harder. I really want someone's opinion about the bits I was thinking of...

pergammano (1958) | 1 month ago | Gosh, my dear....that is soooo wrong! I rode Western ALL my life...competed in many, many stampedes! At any given time, we had upwards of 60 horses, as my father was a game guide, and the most USED piece of equipment, and the least offensive is the "hackamore"! We owned several teams of draught horses, as the roads to the base camps, were vehicle unfriendly! I grew up deep in the country, and the first car, in our area...was at 12 years old, and the owners were considered rich. School was attended on horseback..10 miles each way, daily! I know from whenst I speak! A split bit is called a "snaffle,"! A "hackmore" has NO mouth piece! My father wouldn't even let me own a horse of my own, unless I was able to shoe it properly...Farrier's were NOT part of our language. Good luck!
