i am really in dilemma.im holding a middle supervisory post and my senior officer would take my class that i should be more strict with my subordinates.but while dealing with them himself he potrays such a lenient figure that everyone would think i am the bad guy.i tried to talk straight to him on this topic as it seems absurd my being strict on things on which his decisions are going to be final (and he acts so permissive then),he tells he doesn't want to shed his social image. and also tells me that i will understand it better if i am married...i hate such hypocrisy..i don't know why the so called married people not speak for truth because they are social and can't afford to shed their goody-goody image??the same policy is adopted by my colleague too who is married and is supposed to share equal amount of responsibilty as me.but even she won't bother to say a word so much necessary to discipline the department for the same sake that she is social.and both of them feel i being single can afford to be politically incorrect as i don't have social obligations of raising a family...pretty funny and illogical....how to handle such people??? any suggestions...

Promote some kind of contest where the contestants would be aiming for strategies to make your office environment better.

Since it seems they are totally incapable of recognizing their faults or anything, try to look internally and see if there is anything you could change to make it easier. Or you could hold a conference and debate what you have wanted to say. I think it is this breakdown of communication that is plaguing you. Best of Luck.

ya in a way i am concerned about the breakdown of communication .i have thought over it and have decided to keep my mouth shut and not react to any of the thing my senior or my colleague says or to whatever breach of discipline my subordinates do. its as much their department too and they cannot shrug off their responsibilities on me..let them do their bit .thanks i need a fair chance of luck now to prove my point.

I don't get how being married has anything to do with your work. It should be seperate and you should do just as good a job in work when you're married or not. I realize the dilemna between friendship n work. u need to find a good balance. if you're too lenient then nothing will get done. if everyone just fools around at work it'll be inefficient, there has to be a driving force. i hate it when everyone gangs up on you and you're the only one who's taking something seriously. So it's work and you should work hard and focus in there, so you're doing a good job. It's stupid how your superior officer is. I hate two faced hypocritical people. He's only trying to make himself look good. Maybe you should tell the workers the truth. But don't be TOO strict. because my mom has a HORRIBLE supervisor that makes her life a living hell at work. she is WAY too strict. and in that case you only make a horrible stressful environment in the workplace. Your colleague needs to pick it up and work. I know she wants to be friendly but there has to be a united front if anyone is to listen to you. if only u say it but she doesn't take a stand on it. they'll think they'll be able to get away with it around her.

i dont get what politically correct has to do with your situtation tho.

thanks a lot for your thoughtful suggestions.by being married my boss means that ..they have to have more social network so its difficult in his part to be strict to the subordinates..most of my subordinates are females with young child and that gives them the alibi to come late,go early, not finish work on time.since my colleague is in the same boat doing the same things she doesn't take a stand even if sir suggests her the same things too.since many of the subordinates have good terms with sir's family he feels i should be the one taking up the disciplining task.i know, what your mother must be going through.i myself hate a stressful work environment but too permissible ones aren't good too.by being politically correct i meant the kind of comments my senior and colleague will be putting up when faced with a conflicting situation.they will be very diplomatic and put the job on me.i would be truthful and honest rather than be diplomatic.so there goes the problem.

Yes I understand that people have kids and it might delay them. But once in a while, not everyday. I bet most of them would be able to get on time if the rules were stricter. It's always possible, u just start everything out 10 minutes earlier. Because I know myself, when I'm in school and there is a class i get punished for for being late, I run there and make sure I'm not late. But there are a few classes that the teacher doesn't really care and he doesn't yell at you then I come late to their class by 20 seconds usually everyday because I walk instead of having to run.

No backbones anywhere>Huh? If I were boss, I would be firm, fair, consistent, helpful, kind, and encouraging. If I needed them to work harder, I would have a contest. The one that did the most work would get a free day off. They will break their necks to get a day off. Be honest. If the top boss says do this, tell your help that the big boss wants it this way. If your boss complains, ask him if the company shouldn't be honest.

well i wish he would be that way...but we are in a public sector enterprise with the famous hierarchy and red tapism.so honesty goes down the drains...as its the smart workers who survive and the hard workers are victimised...
