Whoopie pies

Huh? Maybe it is because the hour is late but when the article title popped up on helium my first thought went to the obvious inferred double entendre. Now there are a lot of places the brain could go with this one, but the simple truth of the matter is I am just trying to figure out how the heck something becomes known as Whoopie pie.
It's apparently from Pennysylvania where it is quite popular. They appear to be more of a cookie sandwich than a pie, kind of like Moon Pies. You really do learn something new every day (with a little effort)!

When I first saw the title I was thinking it was an actual pie baked in a pan. Silly me.
