How Do I Prepare My Strawberry Plants For Winter? email this discussion to a friend?

I planted some strawberry plants two years ago. The first year I just let them go so they would get stronger and this past summer we had a lot of strawberries. It was awesome.

Now the summer is over, we have had a couple of frosts already and I am wondering if there is something I should be doing before we get snow?

How do you prepare you strawberry plants for winter?

Strawberry plants are very hardy. I live in northern Colorado and it gets pretty cold here and I don't do anything to my strawberries. The leaves stay green almost all winter. If you want to do something, just pile a little mulch loosely around them.

We have our strawberries in a raised bed. Last year we did absolutely nothing to them for the winter and we had a great harvest of strawberries. I was just wondering if we had lucked out or if they really were that hardy.

Our strawberry plants have changed from green leaves to red leaves.

Yes, the leaves will turn red or bronze... when I said "green" I meant that they don't die back. Sorry for not explaining it better! Your strawberries should do fine.
